As a new author I'm looking for some advice, as well as submitting to Literotica, what sort of publishing houses do you look at submitting erotic fiction to or do you tend to go down the self publishing route?

Two types of tales publish themselves: The first is so good that readers will steal it; the 2nd type is the fruit of a writer whose dad is a publisher.

Sadly very true I imagine but if you were to submit to a publisher yourself are there any known and respected for erotica?

By advised that JBJ is our local pet troll. I don't know what he said specifically because I have him on ignore but i imagine it's one of his usual one line bullshit replies. Take him with a grain of salt and a dose of aspirin.

Also, welcome to the AH. Be patient an answer to your question will be along shortly. The main two to answer such a question are busy at this time of the year.

I have had the same question for some time and have in my research found a number of Erotic publishers who will take a 'first novel'. Self publishing on Amazon or what ever seems to be the fastest was to income, but getting exposure is the problem.

Using Lit to hone your skills is a reasonable approach, rack up some scores and perhaps eXcessica (?) may chat you up?

Not really. The hardest part of making income off writing is promoting it, not either writing or publishing it. Amazon.com gives you only one sales/promotion point (unless you buy a larger distribution package). At the minimum, for sales, you should find an e-publisher (which isn't nearly as hard as finding a mainstream one), which will combine your book with others--thus increasing the offering and, mostly likely, those looking for something to read/buy--and will put it on offer on a large number of online distributor points where erotica e-book buyers go to look for their purchases/reads.

And if you can get a reviewer site to review it (google for these), that will add exposure for your title as well.

To find an e-publisher to submit to, go to online e-book stories carrying erotica (Amazon, Allromaneebooks, Fictionwise, Smashwords, etc.) and browse for the types of books/stories that are like yours. Note the publishers and go to their Web sites and look at their submissions guidelines.

There are several entries in the Essays and How To sections here on Literotica that will help you in e-publishing or submitting to Literotica. I have a few here myself you might check out:'

Well spoken good man? I've been uploading stories to Literotica for ten years and want to try my hand at selling some. I will probably edit the current ones some more and give a few of them out for free, and charge for follow on chapters. I am new to this and reading everything, so thanks for the comments so far. I have been publishing on Literica for 10 years and am ready to sell some stories online. If you've read the French Virgin series I wrote it ten years ago.

Ive read the piece that Allison Brio sells and it seems ot have good direction. What about books on Amazon? Suggestions are appreciated.

In my experience, it is much easer to get non-fiction published. In terms of promotion, I speak at a couple of conferences every year, and Amazon "Customer Reviews" and sales rank are important. I am a highly paid manager at a major corporation, but I could live off advances and royalties; I may start doing that soon. I am burned-out professionally.

One pice of advice to live by: Get the largest advance you can. Not every title produces royalties beyond the advance. Make the publisher take some financial risk and get paid for your time writing.

The trick to non-fiction is to know something interesting. I am an expert in certain technical subjects, but I have a colleague who is successful writing about the art of filming sporting events. I know a guy who writes about social dynamics in the work place.

Regarding erotica: My father used to write fetish porn under contract from a certain pulp news stand publication. He was paid 4 to 6 cents per word in the 1980s. His editor would request some kinky scenario, and dad would write it. Sometimes he had to lookup the fetish to even know what is was. For example, I recall one of his stories about people who like sex in the presence of horses but not with the horses - sex on horseback etc.. There is a similar group who put saddles on their human lovers and ride them. I understand that the market for that stuff died with the advent of the Internet.

Thus increasing the offering and, mostly likely, those looking for something to read/buy--and will put it on offer on a large number of online distributor points where erotica e-book buyers go to look for their purchases/reads.

Try Smashwords. I'm currently in the process of publishing "Dirty, Sexy Girls" through them. They make your book available on all the electronic reading platforms.
