I have several ideas for erotic stories I'd like to write, but two things always interfere with getting them done:

1. staying away from sex cliches, which is very difficult to do when the action gets going. There are certain words that always go together, like "masturbate" and "furiously."

2. personal arousal at what I'm writing/thinking about: it sneaks up and overwhelms me, and the next thing I know, I'm beating the bishop rather than writing the story. Is it simply a matter of discipline that allows people to channel that arousal into the work, or do people have some tricks and techniquest to get around it and actually get stuff written?

Hi there!

I am a lazy writer so i just write when i feel the urge.

My advice is just to write.... write those cliches if they come to mind then look at them when you edit. It's much easier just to write and keep the flow going than worrying about every time you use the term "manhood" or"flower! :)

Try writing the scene using metaphors ;) Think of the word you want to use then get a good thesaurus.

I think here old boy, you will just have to use the mind over matter trick.

I mean, I write both fantasy and historical fiction, with the odd horror/erotic . Never cut someone's head off with a sword or dug up granny from the graveyard. Yet

No point in asking if PerceivedAsReal is for real, so let's take them in the order given.

1. Roget’s Thesaurus. Also check for Whispersecret’s "Erotic Synonyms" in the Writer’s Resources.

2. You could always use the time-honored method of tying on boxing gloves, and type, hunt-and-peck method, with your nose.

Someone here once said "write hot, edit cold". If the story is making you hot as you write then it must be a pretty good fantasy; so set yourself the task to at least finish one part of it that you can then reread and... erm... enjoy by yourself.

PAR: Cliches are something that you will get. You will learn the ways to avoid them as you get more experienced as a writer, but they still happen. Many is the time that I've hit delete after writing something like 'he slid himself into her hidden depths and she moaned as his hand fluttered against her petal.' The trick is to recognise, delete and put in something else. Practice and a good editor will make perfect.

With the arousal thing, I would suggest setting yourself a target. 'I will write up to the bit where he puts the handcuffs on and then I'll let myself go for it.' That way you write in little chunks and you manage to get something done.

"He masturbated happily."
"He masturbated evilly."
"He masturbated hopefully."
"He masturbated productively."
"He masturbated lovingly."
"He masturbated morally."

That last one is my favourite...:D

I don't know what this thread is about but here is my contribution, anyway.

Having a chain-saw in his hand he masturbated somewhat cautiously.

You have my no. 2 requirement in men: making me LMA-not quite completely-O.

I see you a ROFL, and I raise you a "being born without arms, he masturbated with great difficulty and discomfort".;)

Flicka, you have my no. 2 requirement in men too; Oh, I'm so confused. I think you're smarter too.

Hi and Welcome to Litland PerceivedAsReal (if you haven't already been welcomed) :D

Here's my thoughts on your problems.

1. Read more! Widen your word knowledge and you'll find that the cliches are less frequent.

2. Decide which is more important, why you are writing. Are you writing for your own pure enjoyment, or are you writing because you have a need to get a message across to others? Maybe, if you want to write to improve your writing skills, then it would be an idea to jack off before sitting down to write?

Good luck with your writing. :)

Oh well ... might as well join in :)

Suffering from short term memory loss, he masturbated forgetfully.

Being born in France, he masturbated continentally.

He masturbated ambidextrously.
He masturbated sinisterly.
He masturbated unluckily.
Always a loser, he masturbated unsuccessfully.
He masturbated piously.
He liked to masturbate in a friendly convivial way.

p.s. I like your special warpiness as displayed above.

Thanks for all who advised.

I consider myself a very strong writer, but there's something about writing erotica that always eludes me--I seem to have good ideas for stories, but when I turn to develop them I run into the two obstacles above. I'm usually very pleased with my word usage, and an on-the-spot edit can generally get me at least moving in the direction I like, but sex cliches just keep...showing up...

If I try to reduce it to mechanics too much, it becomes clinical, and if I try to romanticize it too much it becomes sappy and hackneyed.

I dunno...maybe I just need broader life experience, so that when I "see fireworks" I can think of something else to call it besides "see fireworks."

The answer to the second obstacle does seem to be discipline, according to what people are telling me.

*sigh*

I'll never make it. ;)

1. Write it anyway, don't worry about the cliches, and then tidy them up in the editing.

2. Stick with it until you're at the most aroused point you're going to get, and then go for it, preferably putting something waterproof over the keyboard. Then go back to it and bring it to as speedy and logical a conclusion as you can. If you just got that aroused, chances are most of you're readers have too, and they're probably not gonna be too interested in reading anything further.
