I was wondering, since I've been on a big health kick since March. Do any of you do any special exercises or workout routines in order to perform better? (Gawd, it's not the olympics ya dolt!).

I know this probably doesn't make much sense. But I was just wondering if anyone does workout specifically to stay in shape for a BDSM activity. Subs, Dom/mes, Tops, Bottoms, anyone... feel free to respond.

I should have a better workout routine for better health in general. Does that count? ;)

I can tell you more from just my general knowledge of exercise -- that yoga and pilates are both great to strengthen your being and your inner core (muscle wise and mentally)

I can't imagine that lifting weights wouldn't hurt either. ;)

Ditto -- I know far too much about being healthy to have the excuse of NOT lately. Argh.

So -- I'm right there with ya Chele. ;)

I took up belly dancing. Its a great low impact aerobic workout. It also has taught me to move certain parts of my body in new and interesting ways.

Besides that, its fun.

Yes of course. That's the main reason why I am doing what I do. But I was kinda wondering if anyone does things specifically for BDSM.

For example... I imagine if you are into bondage.. and you get hung from the wall or the ceiling alot. I would thing that your arms would get super tired, unless you had conditioned them to endure that kind of activity. I doubt I could last 10 minutes being bound like that. But if I were given time (3 weeks or so) and developed a workout routine specifically to help me endure longer I could probably go indefinitely... or at least longer that 10 or 20 minutes.

So something along those lines... i'm sure others have their own type of "thing" they wished they could do better and longer and stronger.

PBW "Do they have thrusting exercises for the Dommes?" LOL

Okay, so now I have images of some one walking into a gym and telling a personal trainer, "I gotta my arms in shape so I can be hung from the ceiling properly."

Damn, PBW, you are keeping me laughing today!!

My exercise (drug) of choice...

For my own personal well-being, I walk 3 miles every evening with my roommate. It's a great way to clear your head at night! And it's common for me to walk around before work and on lunch break, since I get bored and don't seem to have a lot in common with my co-workers to sit and talk about.

(Plus, I miss the days of working on my feet instead of my ass, despite the better working conditions!)

Hey, no gettin' ideas, Ebonyfire - I'm not LOOKING for anyone to work my ass... :j

Pilates

Developed by a dancer named Joseph Pilates, Pilates is a set of exercises designed to improve strength and flexibility. Actually, it's kinda like yoga, except that you don't 'hold' positions, and there's no emphasis on spirituality.

The mat exercises are supplemented by exercises involving exercise balls, as well as machines that will probably look rather familiar to a BDSM enthusiast. Hmmm... Seems like Pilates might be the way to go...

Anyway, I was introduced to Pilates by my sister, who's a dancer. She's been doing them forever; I started three years ago. I've noticed definite improvements in my strength, flexibility, and balance. It has made me more aware of my posture in my daily life, so that I generally feel better attuned to my body and its health.

I wouldn't say that I do it to prepare for BDSM sessions, but the flexibility and strength certainly do make a difference!

Thanks for the info and link Nemo ! :rose:

Wow Nemo! She just described it more concisely than I could possibly imagine!

I have to say -- there is something amazing about the Pilates machine (and I'm not saying that because I'm kinky lol)

But when you're first learning out to work the machine -- it's all about (and in fact that mat exercises emphasize this too) isolating and strengthening your core muscles. Your physical core -- literally your center. You learn to lift your leg using the proper muscles -- and not including say your back or stomach muscles to help. It's bloody hard work!!!

There are some excellent Pilates and Yoga tapes out there (I'm a big Hatha and Vinyasa yoga fan.) I'd say one the best places to just look around is www.gaiam.com -- there's so much on the site, aside from the tapes. And in my book they sell the best yoga tapes -- the Living Arts series with Rodney Yee. But gaiam is also just a great site because they sell all sorts of books, equipment, health products, they're even connected with Whole Foods.

It's fun just to check out their stuff. :)

Oh yes -- and my other comment about Pilates...(which I actually discovered through Ballet friends back in the early '70s) is that now it's so incredibly hot in LA & NY -- that some of the really "in" gyms have started "Yogalites" classes. LOL. My gym happens to be one of them...if I ever check it out and survive the workout (everyone in my gym is slim and fit beyond belief -- figures, we're across from ABC's studios, lol) -- I'll report back if I think it's anything interesting. ;)

A wonderful description, thanks Nemo!

???????????????

Who are all these pirates helping people get into shape with machines??

Look good in a tutu?

Well, from a guy's perspective, I can't say much about belly dancing or ballet. If you want to get into shape and stay that way you need to combine two types of exercise:

Strength and conditioning.

Myself, I run 3-4 times a week anywhere from 3-5 miles. I mix in stationary biking and rowing. For strength work I do the following: reverse incline situps, regular crunches, crunches on a large ball, pull ups, more abdominals on the pull up bar, pushups where I have my feet on a platform. I do varying degrees of this stuff at least 3 days a week.

At one time I was close to 190 lbs. Now I am at about 176.

One final note: I stopped having a big lunch and usually eat an energy bar of some type instead. Now that I am on a regular exercise program I can occasionaly eat "Big Macs" or hot fudge sundaes without gaining any weight.
