So.

For those of you that aren't familiar, Claire's is a jewelry/knick-knack/hair accessories, etc, type store at the mall that caters to teens and teeny-boppers. I went in the other day to buy chopsticks (for my hair) and noticed that they have a rather extensive line of handcuff jewelry/accessories out. Good grief, Charlie Brown!

It's so funny (in my eyes, anyway) that I thought I'd share with you all here on Lit. Here's a few pictures of most (although not all) of the handcuff accessories. Please note the pink rhinestones, they're quite an eye-catcher.

I'd love to hear from some of the parents here on Lit. Would you let your 12 year-old daughter purchase these earings? Bracelets? Necklaces? What would you do if she suddenly came home bedecked in miniature handcuffs?? What if she was 10, not 12? Do you feel being a PYL/pyl affects your opinion of children/teens wearing something suggestive of BDSM? (I'm sure not everyone equates handcuffs with BDSM, but handcuff jewelry seems pretty sexually explicit to me. Whatever my/your opinion on the subject, there's no denying these are being marketed to fairly young girls.)

Sir Winston, how does this affect your ponderings on BDSM becoming mainstream?

BTW, no I didn't purchase anything. :D

But yeah, I did kind of like the silver bracelet.

haha handcuffs are oh so trendy here. I know some kids that have some hanging on their wall (I have a picture of them....but I'm also kind of in it so no dice). My friend and I have handcuff beltbuckles we got in grade 9 because we thought they were funny, and pretty much every kid in the city has handcuffs on the steering wheel of their car, or hanging in the rearview mirror. All in all, I'm kinda sick of handcuffs. It didn't really bother me until all of my little sister's friends started getting into it. And there is nothing worse than seeing a 15 year old wearing a shirt that says "sticks and stones may break my bones but whips and chains excited me." Oi vay.

Haha if I can get it away from her you can have it. I would feel much more comfortable if it were somewhere that's not here.

I remember when my sis was 13 and she was all gothed up with her leather d-ring collar and the like someone that lived by us saw her (some one in BDSM as I later learned) asked her if she knew what it ment to be collared, even offered to take her to the dungeon. I don't know if she is into BDSM or not, but she was always interested in doing stuff for the shock value.

We haven't really discussed much on how we'll deal with our relationship as the children get older, or how we would deal with them showing signs of bein in BDSM. I think we'd be understanding (at least I hope so) and try t oexplain on an age appropriate level the ifestyle (similarly as with sex ) We will always put an emphasis on safe sane and consentual, but I think it would be wrong to put a taboo label on wearing collars (chokers too). Though a 15 year old wearing that t-shirt might be a bit much. until baby is 18 we're responsible for him. I dont need him getting all bruised up and the gym teacher calling CPS for abuse. GOD I could just see that one: ":No judge, we did not beat our son. " "Then where did he get them?"
"Judge, I got them from my Mistress, i love it when She canes me."
"See, right out of his own lips! We didn't do it!"

ugh, it'd be bad!

Poor kiddies... Almost nothing left to go shock their parents... I mean, what are they supposed to do? Resort to the only few available taboos out there... But I completely agree: Oi vay!

(I feel really old now... I don't understand teens anymore, they are so strange, and so young...) :(

Oh no, life gets worse and worse and parents sure aren't what they used to be... ;)

Well, considering that my daughter's current favorite outfit is her orange shorts, lime green T-shirt, and rainbow striped knee-high socks, handcuff earrings wouldn't shock me.

But, no I wouldn't buy them for her or let her wear them out in public.

Heh ... i have this exact same pair of dangly cuff earrings, shown as, ' claires_jewelry3.jpeg '.
my Master bought them somewhere online, probably at EBay.

Claire's IS one of my 12 year daughter's absolute favorite stores, and has been since she was as young as 8 or 9. If she came home wearing any of that jewelry i wouldn't object, more likely, i'd be casual about it rather than let her see any concern coming from me. i don't care to be the cause of a rebellion coming from her. i'm sure i'll get that sometime in the next few years without my having to provoke it from her. As a parent, although she's only 12, i have already realized on a few occasions, to let her be and in no time at all ... she moves onto something else as a mode of self expression. Besides, knowing her as i do, none of the jewelry shown here would interest her much. She's more of the 'princess type' .. into a very feminine, very girly type, frilly, soft style when it comes to fashion and accessories. She's more likely choose 'pearls and lace' over 'leather and chains'.

Of course, i aint holding my breath or taking it for granted that this won't change. She IS only 12 .... so.

No change. I see more and more of it as I wander out and about - goths everywhere, of course, even in the hills of Tennessee (!), the "whips & chains" t-shirts, etc.

However, as they grow older, most of these "rebels" will retreat to something near their parents' (perceived) values, as most of each generation does... so the process of mainstreaming BDSM will likely take a little while.

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but I don't really see what is so shocking about handcuffs. Just another one of those other silly "trendy" things teens completely miss the point on. Have you seen all the "spank me" stuff out there? Heck, the slutty whorish clothes that parents let their kids walk out the door wearing is a lot mroe shocking to me than handcuff jewlery and goth getups.

Honestly, I'm not sure why I find handcuffs so shocking, but I do. I guess they scream to me of violent or extreme sex, and I think it's inappropriate to market that to little girls.

But hey, I don't know if that's even what the designers had in mind.

Personally, I would want my child to be at least 15 or 16 before I felt they were old enough to wear something like that. Old enough to understand what the _sexual_ implications of jewelry like that is. If they were 16 and wanted to sport a handcuff bracelet, I doubt I would have a problem with it.

I'm not a parent, so I'm betting my opinion would drastically change if I were LOL.

I guess I didn't really think of little girls in claires, was thinking more of the teenagers. I get disgusted when I walk through Herbergers or JCPenny these days shopping for baby clothes for my neice and nephews...I'm shocked at the stuff you can buy for very young girls. The clothes look like miniature models of stuff you'd find in any fetish store sometimes, I swear. Thongs, belly shirts, etc.

When (if) I ever have a little girl she will be dressed as such NOT as a little pop star! Hubby and I constantly talk about this when we see 10 year olds wearing high heeled platform shoes and low riders! I'm sorry that style of dress won't be appropriate until at LEAST 16! even if we have to buy her clothes for her and she "hates" us. Soliciting sex when you're too young to fully understand is unacceptable in my eyes.

we've already talked about things we can/can't do out of the bedroom when the baby gets older, like naked chores (again something I could see going very bad)I'll still welcome home subbie with the putting on of his collar, we'll just explain that it is a special hello from mommy to daddy. It will probably cause some form of reproduction by the child, but it will probably be harmless. Other no-nos will include having subbie eat dinner out of a dog dish, nut grabbing, spontaneous nipple grabbing/biting, biting period, Just about everything outward. I can still give him the "Look" and reserve what the look means when baby goes to bed!

totally

I see very cioffed and wealthy moms out with daughters where it's like PUT SOME FREAKING CLOTHES ON, as their 200 dollar juicy terrycloth shorts ride their assses. I mean I don't care how cute you are, if you are 15 I don't need to see that shit.

The 12 year old has been easy as pie ..... so far.
It's the 5 year old who i am betting will give me a run for my money in the coming years.

Check out this outfit. She came up with this in less than 3 minutes after being told to get ready to spend some time at the pool. Dora Bikini, Casper beach towel, PoohBear Sunglasses, a Blowpop, SpongeBob Travel Cup filled with Lemonade, and her Pool Noodle ... what more could you want as a G-rated fashion statement?? i have a feeling she is going to turn out to be a wild one as far as choices of fashion in her future. Too funny ..

Dude we're like twins. We're both ultra cool kids in the same city that know the same people and worked in the same mall. Now we find the same things funny. We should just get it over with and buy matching t-shirts.
