George doesn't want to go to war after all...

After months of beating the war drum, rallying the troops and generally acting the arsehole George now reckons that war with Iraq is avoidable and anyway it's very much a last choice.

What happened? Did the mid-term elections have such a deep affect on your Commander in Chief that he's decided to follow the path of diplomacy and peace as a thankyou to the American voters, or has he slowly come to realise that there ain't many people out here who are willing to support him.

As Chruchill once said about another man and another conflict:

"I don't think I would have been such a fool as to have started it in the first place, but once started I would not have been such a bigger bloody fool as to stop it half way through"

Does anyone trust George's ramblings any more?

From the New York Times - 20 November 2002

"In a news conference with Czech President Vaclav Havel, Bush said a military clash with Iraq was his ``last choice'' -- and an avoidable one. It is still possible Saddam could get the message, Bush said. ``If the collective will of the world is strong, we can achieve disarmament peacefully,'' he said."

Are you serious????

G.W. is just waiting for the littlest excuse to drop on Saddam! While the U.N. inspectors are there the U.S. army is in Kuwait training an armored division. This division will get the job of leading the charge when the time comes.

It is just a matter of time before Saddam "gives" old George a "reason" to send in troops! The only thing that will save Saddam now is if he drops dead or goes and hides out with Osama....

You what is really, funny?

If Iraq has bio weapons and can fire them far enough.. Why the hell would you tempt him.

Perhaps he (or at least those close to him) is/are more shrewd than you give him/them credit for. 16 previous UN resolutions and 20 years of history should have made it obvious that the only thing that Saddam Hussein responds to is force and perhaps serious threats of force. The only way to bully such a recalcitrant foe is to convince him without a doubt that there will be consequences for disobeying.

If you didn't have such a raging hatred of Bush and America, you might see this as savvy piece of statesmanship, Peeps.

Plus, do you really think Saddam will fully comply? This is still George's war waiting to happen - and he has virtually guaranteed UN support.

Welcome back, dishrag. You may want to edit your post and correct the typo.

Good luck staying on that wagon this week, Bucky.

Well George has just found out that Britain hasn't got any spare troops to send along. Since 19,000 UK soldiers are being held back to replace the striking firemen. A senior army commander has just announced on tv that because the troops have been undergoing fire training since September, the army is unprepared and understaffed to go to war.

That may well have something to do with it, but I think the logistics are beginning to strike home to our ally across the sea.

It's doubtful that everything will be in place before February 2003, he's now got very few countries willing to risk an attack from Saddam just to please George and the UN have just put a thumbs down on George's attempt at a full scale bombing of Iraq in reprisal for the British and American planes being fired upon in the 'no-fly' zone.

Note from the New York Times report he's now pleading with NATO to show a 'will to be strong' not a 'will to fight'...

There are cracks appearing all over the place...

Don't suppose the threat of war against Iraq was to get the inspectors in without condition

Mission achieved

Oh dear Hanns my man...

You're giving him far too much credit. This is George W Bush we're talking about. You know the simpleton President who thinks he's a cowboy...

What are you going to use for your excuse for getting piss-ass drunk now?

... or maybe he's the simpleton cowboy that we all think is president.

Anyway, I think he'll still send the troops in, eventually. But I've always suspected this was a congressional election gimmick, and apparently one that's worked. Still, a couple of months ago I heard a theory about W's longer term planning. It goes something like this:

Make a whole bunch of noise, now, about going into Iraq. Get people forgetting about who's robbing them blind for a few months until after the congressional elections. [So far so good...] Then you can back off for 12-18 months until the 2004 Presidential election is upon us! Then you've got a waiting distraction, all ready to use!

I wouldn't put this kind of planning past W.

George doesn't want to go to war? Bullshit. its good for big business, ratings on TV, his popularity and the economy... its almost win win for him.

He wants to head off, but hopefully someone smarter (does he have a dog?) has pulled him aside and said "hey, just have a think about this first please" so he has changed his stance again.

CHICKEN LITTLE

Chicken Little was in the woods,
A seed fell on his tail.
He met Henny Penny and said,

"The sky is falling.
I saw it with my eyes.
I heard it with my ears.
Some of it fell on my tail."

He met Turkey Lurkey, Ducky Lucky,
and Goosey Loosey.
They ran to tell the king.

They met Foxy Loxy.
They ran into his den,
And they did not come out again

pp_man is living proof you can't convince someone they are in denial.

I think he is looking for any and every opportunity to go to war. And I wouldn't put prevarication beyond him so long as it does not hurt his political position.

And you can trust he'll be damned careful about that.

The shortsightedness of the ppman mockers...

is that they actually think this war is going to be fun!

I suppose it can only be expected from people who can't see the depth of my posts...

:p

No I am not him, but I will say....

i love the part where dubya has asked us to help with special services , air and naval support
10% of our troops are needed for emergency cover during next weeks firemans strike , the top brass have said that there are not going to be enough servicemen to fight in iraq and kosovo as well

Would you like a link talking about the surge in munitions orders this week? Saw it on RefDesk.com...

Misdirection is one of the many weapons in the tactical theater.

Get the enemy to relax his guard and think, "Hee, hee, hee, I'm winning!"

"Hey... Anyone hear a loud noise?"

That's precisely what George has been saying all year...
