My daughter had one done, and it was fascinating. She then searched back through birth, marriage and death certificates, as well as census records, and got into the origins of surnames of immigrants. She had, as expected, the Italian and middle Eastern genes from her father's side. She had a smidge of Irish from my father. The bit we're both having a real laugh at is what remains, what she inherited from me... English, English, English, northern Europe, English. Nazis would envy my unpolluted whiteness!
It's funny because, my entire life, my mother has claimed some more exotic ancestry. She claimed her grandmother was secretly Jewish, and that we had a little African snuck in somewhere and covered up as a family secret, along with a big slice of Irish. She even tried to argue that the middle Eastern genes in my daughter's results were from the Jewish/African part of her heritage. My mother has been pulling a Rachel Dolezal :D

Ever had one? Any interesting results? Any concerns about what might be unearthed?

Yes, it confirmed the Scottish genes that were covered up as a family secret, though my mum refused to corroborate it by taking a test.

Some secrets are best left unearthed.

That's pretty cool. And now you get to wear a skirt without losing macho points.

The ancestry dna ethnicity estimate changes all the time. When my test was first done, it said that there was less than 1% native American. So, I figured my Viking ancestors brought back a couple native Americans to have their way with. Then, that went away, but there was still a percent Irish, and again, I assumed my ancestor brought home a maiden for house duty. Now, I'm just a boring 63% Norwegian and Swedish with the rest being Eastern European.

Time for some akvavit and a kishka.

I would love to have everyone in America take one to determine what amount of inbreeding has been going on over the past fifty years, or maybe longer.

Nothing else can explain the level of stupid that is happening right now.

The rural idiots can be explained away due to the small gene pools they have to "dip" into, but the proliferation of urban morons can only be explained by rampant incest.

I wonder how many people have the courage to know the truth about their genetic past.

Another argument for everyone having the test done would be to solve almost every rape and murder where DNA of the perp was recovered.

I know for a fact there are many people who don't want to be tested for that reason alone. They don't even want their family members to be tested because that is almost just as good.

Just remember that, if you have a family member that is adamant about no one in the family getting tested. Big red flag.

My son wanted to do one. He was very intrigued. My husband said don't do it because that is how the government will get your DNA. Who knows what they could do with it. True story.

Uh oh...

I had one done. Totally white and not part Cherokee like I was told. I'm mostly English and Scottish with a wee bit of Irish and a very wee bit of Scandinavian.

Daughter had hers done (different company) because my ex kept saying he was 100% Italian. Nope. Only maybe 35% Italian and a whole bunch of other stuff, including African. Ha! That explains his dark skin.

Talking to Americans, i often wondered about the huge numbers of super white looking people who claim indigenous ancestry.

Secret African makes a lot of sense in America, thinking about it. Lots of mixing, due to the abuse of female slaves, would mean lots of people who could "pass" during segregation.

My paternal Grandmother was a first generation American from an Irish immigrant and a German one. My dad should have been 1/4 Irish and 1/4 German at a minimum. Test came back 38% Irish, English and unspecified Northern European. Not particularly useful. I expected more German, but I would guess that's the northern European. His Patealineal line goes back to the Revolutionary war.

I'll have to ask Mom why she did not do it as well. Her maiden name is German. Early rust belt then early Western blacksmiths. We know her ancestry pretty well. Her Mom's side goes back to Revolutionary war and the Mayflower. What if all those patents of nobility (I exaggerate) are frauds?

My kids would be interesting to see. There's a great-great-grandnother who is clearly not caucasian. That side of that side of the family has factions that do not discuss the possibility and factions that tend to embroider. Best info was 1/2 Black 1/2 Native. Alternate theory is Melungeon. I don't think even answer Paula just have a great handle on where the mall engine came from but that faction says Native and shipwrecked Portuguese sailors.

I'm putting it off in hopes that these things get more targeted iand specific.

That is really common. Most people do not claim to BE native like Elizabeth Warren, but I do believe she was told she had some native in her background. I don't know why that belief is so common. I swear that when I was young, like five or so, my father (who was a huge genealogy buff) told me we had Cherokee by way of Oklahoma on the lines out of Kentucky. Later, as he traced each line back, there was nothing like that in the paperwork he was showing me. I'm the oldest son, and he was big on birthright stuff. He was the last Conager, as was I until I got four brothers and a handful of nephews and a son or two. He insists he never said any such thing.

He traced every line to England or Germany except the Patealineal which got stuck at the Revolutionary war period and the Irish Grandmother's line. The family name, I believe was anglicized. My family received a Kentucky land grant, so that implies paymentnfor services rendered I the Revolution. There is a Captain Conager that was born with a German name. His brother kept the German name. The Father was a German immigrant to the English colonies.

I know several who are natural blondes in Alaskan Native Corporations (where you have to be 1/4 native blood to be a member).

My wife was told as a kid that there was some Sioux in the woodpile and there were artifacts to prove it. Turns out her mom lied. It wasn't the first lie she told.

There supposedly were blue-eyed blondes in Mexico when the Conquistadors arrived. There definitely are blue-eyed, blond Mexicans, but I think those are coming out of the colonies where polygamists fled to when Utah gave up polygamy to get Statehood

Several times I've had people of Roma descent say I'm part Roma f'sure. Wrong again.

I'm a mild cheddar sandwich on sliced white. Not even any mayo.

There were some blue-eyed Mexicans fishing in Bristol bay in the early 1900's according to my grandpa.

Tell your mother that fucking foreigners doesn't merge their DNA with hers. (Slut.)

From Viking ancestry?

From Viking ancestry?

Dunno. Not sure if the pre-A.erican invasion blondes existed. There's a name Mexicans have for blue-eyed Mexicans. I was talking to a Mexican American friend of mine before work and a woman who's a friend of hers that did not know me assumed that I was one of those, because most of his friends are Mexican Mexicans. She asked ¿Como estas? I answered, 'sta bien in my best accent. She looked him and said in Spanish, White boy has no words or some such.

I thought that was a huge leap from blue eyes to blue-eyed Mexican. I asked him about it, and he explained there is a guy working there who is a <whatever they call those> and she assumed I was him.

In Tucson, I'm a novelty. Even the nominally Anglos have brown eyes.

That's interesting because the Colonies were way inland. Chihuahua area near the Sierra Madres, South of El Paso. You wouldn't think they would be seafarers.

I vaguely remember pro-European blue-eyed South Anericans as well. It could be adaptation. I have heard that blue eyes gather light better and are an adaptation for shorter days. The flip side is brown offer better UV protection in the tropics

Ah. Found something. I read abouts these folks years in years ago and I can't remember the context and I don't remember much about it. This seems to sort of what I remember.

While looking for that I fell down the rabbit hole of some of those black Israelite types I think. I forgotten about that as well. There are those who claimed that Africans were already in South America and had migrated North before any of them were ever brought here is slaves. I don't know about anthropological backup for that but that could be because it's reasonable to assume they could have constructed boats and ended up there. The Black Israelites teach that as part of their oral history.

I knew nothing about Black Israelites till I met one in an ER setting. Just chatting, it came up. I nodded along, pretty sure he was one-off brand of crazy, since I was working with crazy back then. I read up about it after. He wasn't buying my nodding along and suggested some reading. Actual crazy people don't catch you shining them on because they aren't trying to put one over on you. They think they make sense. He knew that it would be outside of what I was taught.

The next time I heard anything about it, was the crazy ones harassing passerby in the whole Sandman / Phillips event.

I always find origin stories interesting.
