Yes, I know it seems a bit early as we are only in our 40s and 50s and many of us have no savings or money (though some if us do).

Anyway, after the past 7 months, working from home has gotten comfortable but still not normal. I'm ready to bug out on all this shit at 49. Find a small town somewhere, pick up a few hours a week at stocking shelves at the grocery store or working at McDonald's and be done with all this 50 plus hour a week corporate shit and just try to enjoy life for a few years. Got enough money, the only financial issue would be medical insurance but its doable.

Mostly looking for somewhere without so many damn Milennials and Z people. Also somewhere away from all the BLM / Aunty Pha garbage.

Have looked into Reno /Tahoe, California Gold Country, and the Crimea. All have flaws. Van or RV life would preclude most part time jobs.

Any ideas? Any Gen X'ers thought about it yet?

Expatriate.

And forget everything you've been brainwashed into thinking about everything before you go into your new life.

Hopefully your parents worked hard and saved for a rainy day instead of smoking crack all day and leave a huge estate when they die and you can finally move out of the basement. :)

Me and wife bought land in country to retire to we live
In big city high taxes and going up -close bad neighbors - this tax that tax time to get out in a couple years but we have the ball rolling it’s not talk no more it’s action

Are you going to farm strawberry trees? :)

If you manage to move to the Crimea you don't have to worry about medical insurance.

I'm a bit older than you being late fifties and decided a few years ago that waiting for retirement to do fun stuff is a mugs game. A number of my mates didn't even make 30 and I have known quite a few people either die before retirement or only last a year or so before ill health or death strikes. Since we were in our twenties one of my best mates and I had planned to ship our bikes to the states and tour for 6 months or so, there was always a excuse to not do it (wife, kids, work, etc) then he was diagnosed with cancer and gone before we'd done it.

I'm lucky in that I'm self employed with a good income living in a nice village and gradually taking and more time off (though not this year during Covid).

I have a few friends who chucked in the corporate ladder, daily commute into London etc, sold up and moved out taking far "lesser" jobs. On the whole they are happier and have learnt that they didn't need all the possessions that the corporate life paid for. But I know a couple that lasted less than a year before feeling the need to get back on the corporate rollercoaster, either they missed the pressure and buzz or they missed the money.

Work out what you need and go for that, we only have one life. But having made your decision and gone for it don't bleat if it isn't what you thought it would be, just make another plan and follow that.

I’m going to wait and see how the murder hornet situation goes. Might be time to cash out the 401k and spend it all on hookers and blow.

Just kidding. I’d totally spend it all on books and tea.

Maybe the OP would like a place like northern Arizona, Colorado, or the western Texas uplands. Not many gen x-ers out that way, and far fewer of the social ills that plague larger cities.

Why not find a sexy librarian that moonlights?

Large expat communities in Costa Rica, Belize, and Ecuador.

Old mining towns are cheap and picturesque.

They just found the first nest in the US ... in Washington near the Canadian border ... and are planning to eradicate it today
You are bailing out of America??
If I could get away from the IRS and get good internet ... I'd consider it. I've read some on Costa Rica. It was supposed to be great for a while, but I'm seeing some problems now.

Years ago a friend picked up and moved to Costa Rica. Still there and doing well. America is not the only place on earth. A better life awaits.

Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands are gorgeous.

Wiki page on Puerto Rico Median income is $27k/yr but jobs are scarce. If you have alt income it'd be a different story than if you have to work.

Wiki page on USVI Average income is roughly 39K/yr.

I have actually been looking at land and houses in rural areas. Between two counties and on the border.
I am good with downsizing.
But I haven’t found much to my liking.
I am thinking of building.

.

Oddly, I have no faith when the U.S. government says they are eradicating something.
