Geeky tip : if you aren't backing up you're doomed!

Computers fail! It isn't a matter of, will they but when.

While its best to backup your entire system, you can always, in a worse case situation
a>reinstall windows or
b>buy a new system with windows already installed.

But what you can't replace is your writings, your photos etc. Unless you are very productive, chances are you don't have that much.

In Windows Explorer, right click on My Documents and choose Properties. How much room is your My Documents taking up?

My Documents has your unique, changing files. Saving it, takes a lot of pain out of the "computer blowing up" disaster.

If less that 64 mb, buy a $10 USB drive and backup to it.

if less than 256 mb, buy a $30 drive and backup to it.

If less than 650 mb, and you have a CD burner, cut a CD once a month.

if less than 4 gigabytes, and you have a DVD burner, cut a DVD once a month.

Store the CD's/DVD/USB drive ideally at a location other than where the computer is.

Or watch the sales at Staples, Compusa etc, and buy a 250 gig hard drive for under $50 after rebates, and get a USB drive enclosure to hold that drive. You plug into your USB port and your computer sees it as another drive. Backup to it, and disconnect so you don't accidentally overwrite a file.

Put it on your calendar to update your backup each and every month. The month you don't is the month your computer fails.

If a month old file is worthless to you, backup more often!

The only one I could ever remember was Alt + 255 which is the space bar...In Dos it was a great way of preventing non-geeks from accessing a directory...
