Alright, I honnestly have no idea where to put this.
I'm not to fond of GD, and it doesn't seem to go anywhere else, so here I am.

Anyone in Lit into this particular anime?

I would love to discuss it with anyone, really - I've exausted my geeky friends, so it's time to look for new blood.

I enjoyed watching Gundam Wing. I didn't know that it made me a geek, though!

Nah, just watching Wing alone won't make you a geek...

Having seen all the series... that makes me a geek for it.

All in all, while Wing/EW was good, it wasn't the best of the series...

If it makes you feel better, I had to hunt for this topic. I saw it and meant to post but got distracted.

I've seen every gundam series. I even went through and watched all of UC Century in 'order' (Unicorn excepted, that's not done yet)

My favorite is PROBABLY SEED, but I'm rather fond of Wing (nostalgia, I admit) and Zeta is pretty much made of win. The beginning of 00 was slow, but by the middle of season one, it picked up enough that I would actually pick up a perfect grade model if they made one of Exia or 00. Still need to put together my Aile Strike Rouge.

Yeah... I'm a gundam geek.

Oh, and I also play Dynasty Warriors Gundam, if you want some multiplayer.

I have watched them even though they are formulaic and have essentially the same message...

Yes.... but the giant robots! And you're required to like it if you're a boy with any ties to Japan. I swear, your testicles don't drop over there until you swear allegiance to RX-78.

It's the law.

I'm not sure what RX-78 is, so I guess that means that I'm not a geek

I kind of wonder about when people say "formulaic" to dismiss something. Do most Gundam series follow a basic formula? Yup. Generally it's Steal a gundam in space, go to earth, fight, go back to space, end series.
Beyond that - each series is dramatically different (except saying that SEED is similar to the original series - which is kind of a Duh moment).

They may not be for everyone. I quite enjoy them - I like the concept of a strugle to understand one's place in the world and the concept that it is the younger generation who inherits our fights, even if they don't want it - and it's them that will ultimately decide the future. (this was never better expressed than in Turn A).

The reason I started the thread, was because I had just watched the Gundam 00 movie. It's the first time they used real ET's in gundam... but all in all, it left me feeling a little weird. I was wondering what others thought.

Or, what everyones favourite series was (if anyone says G fighter or ZZ, I may have a rant coming on ;) ).

As for what an RX-78 was.

It was the designation of the original frame type for the first multi-role Moblie Suit developed under Project V in UC 0079 (Started earlier... but it took them a while to make something). There was a 3rd designator with the number that determined what type of unit it was. RX-78-1 being the prototype, while RX-78[G] was an exclusive ground type (earth bound combat) made up of spare parts. The most famous RX-78 was the -2, only one survived and was piloted during the One Year War by Amuro Ray - the Original Gundam.

This all comes from the original Mobile Suit Gundam from '79-'80. RX would continue to be the designator for Federation prototype until F91.
All this falls under the Universal Century Gundam Series (MSG, IgLoo, 8th, 0080, 0083, Z, ZZ, CCA, U, F91 and V - with a CRAP load of manga through in to the mix)

Everything else (Wing/EW, X, Gfighter, Turn A, Saviour, SEED, Astray, SEED D, SEED Stargazer, 00 and AGE) - is an Alternate Universe with their own history and origin and age...

But it all comes from the original MSG.
