New York fans set Canadian flag on fire.

*sigh*

It's only been 8 months since 9/11 .. Since there was sorrow on both sides of the border .. since Canadians did what they could not only by donating blood and money, but by opening up homes to stranded passengers because we felt horrified on an attack on what we consider not only a neighbor but a brother.

S'cuse me if I feel and seem just a little jaded right now.

Booing an anthem is one thing... But this is mid-eastern like bullshit.

And yet I'm sure the world will yawn and not give a crap. But if it was Ol' Glory?

All I can do is offer an apology, and hope you'll understand that Lon Gisland isn't the same as the rest of New York. That's so pathetic.

Rude and crude, Liontamr, simply rude and crude.

Not to mention stupid.

Sorry 'bout the assholes, Canadian friends. :(

That sucks.

Sorry, liontmr....

Freedom of speech is a privilege too often misused.

IMHO.

This is horrid and many Americans will think that way. Not all of us are blinded by such a self-serving nature. Those New Yorkers, those Americans, that did this do not reflect the thoughts of all of us. I'm sure there are many on here who feel as I do. Just a sick feeling inside to know that Americans have done this.

I realize that, and I know that the actions of a group of drunks does not relect the attitude of New Yorker's or Americans in the least. So please don't get me wrong in that.. I'm not saying ALL of New York is like this.

But it still stuns the hell out of me that anyone in Canada or the USA would commit something like this... Over a damn hockey game no less. I tend to wonder what Islanders captain Mike Peca or star goalie Chris Osgood think of their fans burning thier home nation flag.

I just don't get it.. Hell I don't get why one would boo the anthem of another country let alone this.

Y'know what...Fuck New York. Fuck whiny ass New Yorkers. All they ever do is bitch.

Just like not all mid-easterners are out burning U.S. and Israeli flags, most Americans wouldn't do something so stupid and offensive. At least, not the *same* stupid and offensive thing.

Stupidity is the only true universal.

I am horrified to read this, Liontamr!

Please do NOT confuse "New Yorkers" with Islanders hockey fans! Being the game was, in fact, played out there meant that there couldn't have been much of a "mob".

I'm not trying to trivialize this at all, but even as a life-time New Yorker, I cringe with the mindsets of some of the islanders I have known (some being family members too!). It's a total lack of self-respect these idiots showed, most likely enhanced by booze, beer and lost hockey games!

It's a disgrace.

Jenny I would like to apologize about my statement regarding New Yorkers as far too generalized. Fuck New Yorkers who are such jock-strap sniffers they can't act like civil human beings. There. That's a little better. Not much, and I'm sorry again.

Now let's not get carried away here, Sillyman.

Your comment is just as ignorant as the actions of the flag burners, and only some matter of degree less offensive.

(I grew up in New York and my whole family lives there.)

Inexcusable.

Already apologized. See above and sorry again.

I'm glad I saw your apology before I posted, Sillyman. I was about to carve you a new asshole. :)

Thanks, Sillyman. It's sometimes hard NOT to generalize with this type of disgrace. BTW, I'm a die-hard NY Rangers' fan, but still do NOT take offense with your new generalization!:D I don't really sniff jock-straps!

You know....

I honestly was quite upset when I heard about this. Not to mention that this type of thing has been going one for quite sometime. I was extremely upset (years ago) in which my countries flag was flown upside down during the World Series. And, when I heard that the Women's US Olympic Hockey Team had my country's flag on the floor of their locker room. Now booing at my anthem during a hockey game after my country's people opened thier hearts to the Americans after the September 11th attack. I have just about had it!

I personally donated blood and $500.00 to the cause. I know that the $500 is probably worth $100 bucks in US dollars.....but it made me feel good to do it. I cried....and felt my heart break that day. I still have a hard time looking at the pictures and hearing about that day. I can only imagine the heartache America is going through.

I know that a bunch of druken idiots......and ignoramuses (who can't figure out which way a maple leaf goes!) does not speak for the entire country! I am not that stupid! (Cretien is....but we won't go there)

After September 11th.....I heard nothing! If it wasn't for Larry King and CNN......I probably wouldn't have even heard about the attack that day. And.....our PM told our MPs not to make any comments to the media!!! If it wasn't for Joe Clark....I probably wouldn't have heard my own government's response about the attacks until much later.

I have also discovered that many Americans didn't even know that there were Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan! They found out when the accident happened.

Considering we're neighbours.....we really have no idea what is going on in each other's countries. THIS IS SAD!!! We are practically the same damn country!!! How can we not know what the hell is going on with each other??

Maybe I'm just stupid and naive.....but people used to know their neighbours! Sounds simplistic.....but that's the way I like it!

The whole point of my ramblings (sorry...I'm drunk!) is that....although I am saddened by the stupidity of drunkeness.....I will not condem any American for that action. I will blame our governments and the media for not keeping us better informed of each others actions!

I call my Grandma once a week....on Sunday's...just to see what's up....so who's calling me on Sunday???

Okay....I'm done with the sticky sweet I love everybody crap! I just had to get this off my chest!

Damn Canadians, what with their... uh... maple syrup...

If I ever talk bad about Canada, let it be known that me and most other Americans are kidding. Because nobody really knows shit about Canada, bad or good. We like fucking with you, Canada. It's like Britain.

We kid because we love.

And we have to be allies. You're the first line of defense against the Evil Norse.

That was another joke.

Is sports fever responsible for this so-called patriotism? Look at all the horrible incidents at soccer games and now this. Ridiculous!

My apologies on behalf of these boors.

At least when I act like an asshole, I'm quick with an apology. I'm glad the new generalization is better. (I'm sure you don't sniff jock straps either. You sound like a perfectly nice person from all your posts.)

Glad I avoided a horrible fate at your hands lilminx. A woman mad at me will devastate me real quick.

Sorry again Yogi. Glad we are still on good terms. It's just hard not to react to stuff like this negatively y'know?

Yeah, not all New Yorkers would do something like that. People often act like schmucks at sports events. I think it's pretty shitty the way Americans in general act towards other countries when it comes to sports competitions.

It was said on talk shows and other sorts of media coverage that one possible explination for the booing of the national anthem may be because fans are booing the team being represented by that anthem.. not the anthem and the country itself.

But even that doesn't wash with me.

It's just something that you just don't do.. Not in this day in age. It's wrong for Americans to do it to a Canadian anthem, and it's wrong for Canadians to do it to an American anthem.

Maybe people need to look to Carolina to see how an anthem is treated.. Silence through both, and loud resounding cheers after both.

The way it should be.
