TORONTO (Hollywood Reporter) - "L.A. Zombie," a Canadian indie film described by the Melbourne International Film Festival as "gay zombie porn," has been denied an Australian festival berth by local censors.
The Australian Film Classification Board concluded that implied sex with corpses by an alien zombie in Los Angeles, breached local taste standards.

"L.A. Zombie" will receive a world premiere at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland on August 5, before its North American bow at the Toronto festival in September, according to the film's producers. It was to have screened in Melbourne on August 7 and 8.

Director Bruce LaBruce said the censors viewed only the softcore version of his film, "which features no explicit anally penetrative sex."

LaBruce has built a directorial career shooting hardcore pornography that aims to produce a return for financiers, along with a second softcore version with auteur touches that can screen on the festival circuit to critical acclaim.

The hardcore version of "L.A. Zombie" will be released separately on Halloween after the softcore version plays the international festival circuit.

"Although apparently the Australian Classification Board has no problem passing all manner of mainstream torture porn movies which feature, amongst other things, the rape and dismemberment of women, it's interesting that they have no stomach for a movie that reaffirms life," LaBruce said in a statement.

Canadian filmmaker Bruce LaBruce's gay zombie film banned in Australia

By Craig Takeuchi

Canadian-made sexually active gay zombies are not welcome at this year's Melbourne International Film Festival.
he Australian Film Classification Board reportedlyanned Toronto-based Bruce LaBruce's latest film L.A. Zombie ,from the MIFF, which runs from July 22 to August 8. The indie film follows a zombie (portrayed by French porn star François Sagat) who tries to bring dead people back to life by having sex with them.

LaBruce has previously made sexually explicit art films and porn films, as well as a gay zombie film, Otto; or Up With Dead People , which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

Ironically, the MIFF's slogan is "It's a matter of taste". Is it necrohomophobia? Could a Zombie Pride Parade be next?

Gay zombie porn flick' pulled from Aussie film festival

(AFP) – 1 day ago

MELBOURNE — A "gay zombie porn" flick which shows aliens engaging in necrophilia has been pulled from Australia's biggest film festival after being rejected by censors, organisers said Tuesday.

"L.A. Zombie", which also features homosexual sex and full-frontal male nudity, is the first film in seven years to be banned from screening at the Melbourne International Film Festival, which starts on July 22.

Festival director Richard Moore told The Age newspaper he had received a letter from censors rejecting the film by Canadian director Bruce LaBruce.

Described by Moore as a "video art zombie film", "L.A. Zombie" stars French porn actor Francois Sagat as a man convinced he is an alien zombie sent to Earth to roam the streets of Los Angeles in search of dead bodies and gay sex.

Australia's film classification board said the movie had been denied an exemption from classification, not banned as Moore had claimed.

An exemption would have allowed the film to be shown at the festival, but board director Donald McDonald said he had concluded, from the film's synopsis and the director's previous classification history, that "L.A Zombie" was not suitable for screening.

"In the opinion of the director, the film, if classified, would be classified X18+ or RC (refused classification) and, in this circumstance, the law requires the director to refuse an exemption," McDonald said in a statement to AFP.

Films may not be screened publicly unless they are classified, while classifications of X18+ or RC prevent a film from being shown in most public cinemas.

Moore has defended the festival's attempt to show the film, telling public broadcaster ABC that people have a right to judge it for themselves.

"They know they're not gonna go and see Fantasia or Bambi," said Moore.

"L.A. Zombie" will have its world premiere next week in Locarno, Switzerland.

Last year's festival drew protests from China and had its website hacked over the decision to show "Ten Conditions of Love", a biopic of Uighur activist Rebiya Kadeer.

Right wing bigots. Australia has been moving in that direction for years now and it's hardly surprisng. If you will recall they also have banned pornographic movies featuring women with small breasts claiming it leads to pedophilia. And they banned movies with female squirting for some alleged "moral" reason or another.

People. ALWAYS be afraid when governments start telling you what you should and shouldn't see. No governmnet has the right to legislate morality and this is a worrying sign. Australia and Europe are headed towards oppressive right wing governments which is pretty damned scary imho.

The worst censors of sex are those that aren't getting any or that are getting exactly what they're censoring in others.

While the movie isn't my idea of fun, as long as it has a very clear marker stating that it does contain pornographic content with a primarily male cast, what's the problem?
