Gay and in the Military?

Help!!!

Let me know if you know anyone... if you have ever been in the military and know how LGBTIQ people are treated... anything. Thanks for your time.

It can and will be tricky! The don't ask don't tell thing...well all I can say is to just be very careful! Don't let anyone and I mean anyone know anything about your private life!!!

Sorry that really is not much help, this is a real touchy subject.

The don't ask don't tell policy is her best avenue of defense...don't become complacent with her fellow service members and tell them. It only takes one person getting pissy and out she will go...they don't witch hunt these days like they used to because of that policy. I know someone both male/female that are gay and on AD in the marines...nobody knows its the best way, as for living together might I suggest yall play it off as "roommates" if need be...speaking as military brat/wife everyone knows military folks have roommates because of the poor pay scale and remember what goes on behind closed doors stays there.

I don't know the acronym either, but in my unit there was at least one bi and two gay guys, and three lesbians during my time with the Marines, and none of them ever got in trouble for it, officially or unofficially. They just didn't admit to it at work. There's books, magazines, and pamphlets available with a good deal of information and advice about surviving as a gay in the military; I could ask the friend I still know where to find them if you'd like.

I'm gonna try here...

LGBTIQ

Lesbian
Gay
Bisexual
Transexual
I:??????
Queer

I'm still learning, sorry.

Women have less to worry about if their sexual identity comes out.

The worst I've seen is a discharge of service. Most are Honorable or General discharges.

I've been in 12+ years, I haven't heard about gays getting physically bashed. I have heard about gay men getting harrassed through the mail and vandalism.

I haven't heard of lesbians receiving harrassment.

I was in the Army for 8 years, and you can't swing a dead cat without hitting an obvious lesbian. Whether they come out and say it or not there is large gay and lesbian representation within the U.S. military. Of course they have historically had to put up with the anti-gay speech of right wingers and/or rednecks, but I think that even that is publically unacceptable in today's Army.

thanks

Thank you all so much for your replies. I know that there are more of you out there. Please give me your input and tell me what experience you've had in the military. Thanks.
