Marie stared at the flyer. She was a female gamer and this seemed too good to be the truth. She wondered what the catch was, but it seemed the catch was probably it being an adult game. It was probably disgusting. Still it intrigued her. Marie was walking home from her now ex-boyfriend's house. The fucking pig. It was late and she decided to walk past the address just to check it out and see if she got any weird vibes. The address wasn't far. It was in a nice neighborhood, a nice business section of town. The lights were on and she stared at the flyer and the building trying to see if she had the right place. It looked too ... normal to be a gaming facility.

With a shrug Marie decided to go inside just to verify if this was the right place. She opened the door and a little ding signaled her arrival. There was a receptionist desk and a man sitting behind it. He looked up from his computer and smiled. His hands going from her flyer to her and back to the flyer again. "Interested in the Tester position?"

"I don't know. I wanted to know more about."

"Sweet. We've had that ad just about everywhere and we were beginning to think there was no such thing as girl gamers." He laughed at his own joke, but Marie simply quirked an eyebrow. "Sorry Welcome to Vizar. We make VR games or virtual reality games. It's going to be the new wave. You know the Kinet and the Move right from XBox and Playstation," the man glanced at Marie and kept talking as he got up from behind the desk and approached her. "We'll we're taking that a step forward. We're putting you in the game."

"And the first game you all thought of is an adult themed game," Marie asked.

"Actually no. We wanted to do some sort of first person or third person shooter, but it's complex. We're still in the middle of that now. A haunted game is much simpler. And the only adult portion of the game is that we're making it Rated M for mature, but we can't have 12 year olds coming in to test something that isn't finished so we wanted 18 year old women, plus the cursing, and the slight violence and nudity and you get where I'm coming from."

Marie nodded. "Okay so tell me more about the game."

"I'm Steve. And welcome aboard ..."

"Marie. Marie Noire. Don't ask," Marie said in regards to her last name.

"Okay, Marie. I'm the chief researcher on this thing. I just need you to fill out some paperwork and while you're doing that I'll explain the game. It's called. The Reckoning. You, our hero, is in the game trying to solve various mysteries. You have to collect clues and not," He held up his fingers and did air quotes, "'die' from the monsters inside the games trying to stop you. These are like blobs and tentacle monsters, etc. Because you are our tester we'll give you unlimited lives. So don't worry about dying. We have only 2 other women test the game and they didn't get past level 1, they weren't true gamers, but they did state there was some sort of bug towards female gamers. We're not sure what they're talking about and since they didn't really play video games they couldn't describe. This is where you the self stated video gamer comes in."

Steve took Marie's paperwork and whistled. "You really played these games. You're perfect. Let's get you started. Like I said I've been waiting for over a month to get a female in here and tell me how to fix this game. You ready?"

Marie didn't have anything else to do. "Sure."

"You can put your things in there. Also make sure to keep your cell phone in your purse. We're not sure if the phone's frequency could have messed with the game. It's locked so no one will get your things. Than meet me in this room over here."

Marie nodded and placed her purse, phone, and jacket in the locker. When she went to Steve she sat down in the chair as he placed electrodes on her head. "These will only monitor your brainwaves. You'll fall asleep and the game will monitor and direct your dream. If you need to get out of the game for any reason just wake up. It's simple. Okay?"

Marie nodded. "When do I get paid?"

"Tonight when you're finished. Any other questions."

"This won't hurt me?"

Steve laughed. "No I promise you won't get hurt. You might feel some pain, but nothing that'll really hurt. The game is supposed to be lifelike, but not that lifelike. Unless you want it on hard mode. Hard mode you'll feel everything and we'll pay you an extra $15 so instead of $45 you'll get $60 for every completed chapter."

"Dude let's rock it hard mode style. I'm no newb."

Steve smiled. "Yes! I think I love you. Yes! She's ready. Let's do this."

The chair reclined and Marie felt her eyelids start to hurt in that sleepy pain way. She closed her eyes and when she opened it she was staring at big bloody words The Reckoning. The words faded and was replaced with a back story with flashed of pictures. Apparently her bestfriend, Brittany, is missing and the cops are a dead end. Marie is out searching for her and was going to the last place Brittany was known to be at. The words faded and Marie was looking at the scariest fucking house she had ever seen.

"What was Brittany doing at the fucking Silent Hill mansion," Marie muttered to herself. She walked up the gravely driveway and was amazed at how real it felt. She even tested the rocks and threw one hearing a ping in the distance. "Cool." There was a small flicker as if the game had malfunctioned. It was weird, but she assumed it was just the game working out some kinks. She walked into the house and closed the door.

************************

"What just happened," Steve asked his assistant Marion.

"Dude, I don't know. It seemed some glitch in coding. She's in the house."

"Check out that glitch. What do you see on the monitor?"

"Nothing."

"What do you mean nothing."

"Meaning I can't see what she's doing. I can just hear her and watch her brain waves."

"Is the monitor hooked up?"

"Yes, everything is functional I think it's that glitch. It's cutting me off from seeing what she's doing, but I can hear her. She's in the hallway and soon she'll encounter her first monster who won't notice her. If she's smart she'll find a weapon and kill him or find away around him. Yep, I can hear the monster now. Everything's fine. Go get some sleep. I'll watch her."

It looked and felt and even smelled like a old house. With each step she took she would kick up dust around her feet, yet the only foot or shoe marks were left from here. It looked as though she had been the only one in many years to set foot in this old place. To her right was a stair case witch after the first 2 steps had a large hole in it, no one could have gone up those, not with out a ladder or some rope. Ahead of her she could see down the dimly lit hall what seemed to be a light on in the kitchen. To the left there was a opening into the old living room, sheets covered the couch and chairs in the room, and there was a large monster digging around in the old fire place for something. It was big, and since the game was still very much in testing, a common monster. A Werewolf from the looks it. It was too busy digging around and making a lot of noise to hear or look over to see someone had entered the house. It's easy enough to avoid the busy Werewolf and slip past to the kitchen in search of useful items. When she walks into the kitchen the first thing she will take note of is the brand new table, and chair, sitting in the middle of the room. A note in front of 3 bowls of Chocolate pudding.

"One bowl holds the key, one a monster and one is just damn tasty!"
And on the back of the note it reads.

"Programer warning: Do not eat all three bowls. Unfinished monster will spawn. May cause glitch or crash game when spawned."

There is a nice clean spoon in front of the 3 different sized bold. from left to right, a small one, a big one and a middle sized one. If she was to check the rest of the room she'd find the lack of anything useful. Most of the doors and drawers were empty or locked. The only other thing to note was the 2 doors in the kitchen. One leading out back, but looking through the window on the door it only lead to a empty field out behind the house. The other door seeming to lead to another room or basement.

Marie walked slowly through the house and could hear already something else in here. Her heart rate kicked up a notch. What would the monster look like? What would it do to her? How would she die? Did the manufacturers think about people with heart problems? She know she filled out paperwork saying she was perfectly healthy, but what if she was lying? Would they be able to help her? These should be questions that she should have asked, but didn't think of.

Marie peeked around the corner and froze before quickly hiding again. The monster was huge, hairy, and smelled. It wasn't a real putrid smell, but it smelled like earth and outside. It was also a lot more real looking than she would have thought. Scary. Marie decided she was going to go Splinter Cell style; total stealth mode. Marie skirted past the two doorways and listened. The monster didn't even know she was there. Good! She snuck into the first room and saw it was the kitchen! Yes, that meant a knife or something. She couldn't find a single knife. What the hell, no weapon!

With a sigh she went to the table and looked at the three puddings. She stared at it. And stared at it. And stared at it. What the fuck?! She picked up her spoon and dug around inside the first bowl. She didn't feel anything in there. She placed the spoon in the second and third bowl.. still felt nothing. "Where's the damn key," she muttered.

A loud noise had Marie grabbing the second, middle bowl and eating the pudding. She wasn't sure what this bowl held, but dammit she needed that key or to pass chapter 1 if only because the other women did not.

The game jumped a frame as it was normally called when she started eating the pudding. The room behind her started to melt and the floor started to flood the floor behind her. The strong smell of chocolate filled the room as it melted. The frame above the doorway she walked through to get into the kitchen started to melt and cave in. The door to the outside started to be covered in melted chocolate as well. Soon the floor behind her started to bubble up, and a blob the roughly the size of a human bubbled up, like a slow bubbling fountain. The blob was motionless ass it sat/stood there as it had no forum but that of a large mass of melted liquid. It made no moves towards her, but the room around it was slowly melting into chocolate.

Marie finished the pudding and scraped the bottom of the bowl. She had missed that everything went all gooey around her. She was focused on the bowl. The bowl was empty so what gives. She looked back to the card and then to her bowl slowly she felt the prickles on the back of her neck. You know the kind where you can feel someone staring at you. Slowly she turned her head and there was this brown glob in front of her. Marie stifled a scream and looked around for a weapon. Was she going to be killed early like the others? How does she get out? How do you defeat this gooey thing?

The thing took a step and Marie couldn't handle this. Usually at home she would just press pause and then regroup. She couldn't press pause here. "Fuck this. Wake up Marie." Marie looked around. Nothing happened. She started to panic. She closed her eyes and tried again. "Wake up." She opened them and the thing was closer. She ran around the table putting the table between it and her. "Wake up, wake up, wake up!" Still nothing happened. "Oh fuck!"

Meanwhile...

Marion stared at the controls trying to get the monitor to work. He finally gave up and stared at Marie's brainwaves. They were so relaxing. Steve needed sleep. The man hadn't slept in days as he tried to get this project and finally finding a female test subject to finish this damn project on. If they succeeded this would make them richer beyond their dreams. A new age of video game play. Buuuut that also meant Marion had been working like dog too. He was dead tired. A quick nap wouldn't hurt. Besides Marie had unlimited lives. She'll just respawn and all he had to do was just go over the results. Yeah a quick little nap. What's the worst that could happen.
