Maybe because when they were first worn the response was "Gee, what's the point?" (since they reveal so much) or "Gee, that looks hot."

Gee-string

During a session of drunken revelry, the guy on stage broke a string on his guitar, I believe it was the g-string. Suddenly someone said that the g-string breaks all the time, to which I commented to a female friend, "Is that why you're throwing away your g-strings all the time." Anyho, they do look delectably tight like the G-string on a guitar.
