Fukushima's Nuclear Waste Will Be Dumped Into The Ocean, Japanese Plant Owner Says

What's even more strange to me is that none of the major massmedia who keep complaining about Climate Change and so on paid any attention to this ecological assault.
Odd.

RELATED TRIVIA

I was listening the other day to this talk, and the guy mentioned all the radioactive No Go zones.
He also referred to the potential ecological disaster that might happen hundreds or thousands of years from now, if some archaeologists from the future dig up our buried radioactive waste by mistake.
I just googked it now, and I wonder of he might have had this in mind:

"AP East Germany stored its radioactive waste at a facility at Morsleben, in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt. Shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Angela Merkel, then the environment minister, allowed considerable amounts of radioactive waste from the affluent West to be dumped in the Morsleben salt deposits -- despite the concerns of the Federal Authority for Radiation Protection and the opposition of local politicians."

Where did your frotting buddy Annie the catfishing trannie chase off to?

Dumping radioactive waste into the ocean is the cheapest means of disposal and maximizes shareholder returns, which is in accord with teh Glibertarian Protocols. Fuck the environment.

On another related note:

It also shows that Angela Merkel (then Environment Minister for Eastern Germany) was prepared to sell Her country and citizens for a buck.

Can one trust their officials?

Merkel became environment minister in 1994.

Merkel became environment minister in 1994.
I checked it out and you're right.
But still (even if it doesn't excuse my ignorance on the topic):

"BfS (the Federal Office for Radiation Protection) research found that storing nuclear waste in salt deposits posed great risks. The agency says if Asse II were to fill with water, people in the area would be exposed to 100 times as much radiation than the maximum allowed by current laws.
Greenpeace reports that the Asse II repository is taking in as much as 12 cubic meters of water per day.

Greenpeace claim that, despite the BfS warning, Merkel changed the existing law in April 1998 to add another five years to the operating life of Morsleben and to extend the exploratory work on another proposed salt mine dump near the northern German village Gorleben."

"While the government of the Land of Lower Saxony (via Lower Saxony Oncological Disease Registry) acknowledges the increased rate of cancer and leukaemia incidence around the town of Wolfenbüttel, near which Asse-II is located, the authorities still deny that the troubling trend has anything to do with the proximity to the radioactive waste storage facility."

Another thing that this points to -sorry OP for hijacking the thread, my last post at least for now-:

All these power structures are self-perpetuating.

How else can one explain how people got stuck with people like Angela Merkel (who demonstrated poor judgment, if not questionable morals in the past), Putin (former KGB agent), Hillary and Trump, or their just as bad alternatives
- when so many more people who are more moral and better at the job never made it towards the top?

We only have the illusion of democracy - choosing between compliant candidates that were filtered by the system.

Must be those liberal GB cool kids, they must have got to the media and the climate change whiners, oh, and Rob. That guy is such an asshole.

Dumping at sea is so wasteful.

Haul it to Mar-a-Lago instead.

I'm sure a deal can be made.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean_disposal_of_radioactive_waste

The countries involved — listed in order of total contributions measured in TBq (TBq=10 to the 12th Becquerel) — were the USSR, the UK, Switzerland, the US, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Russia, New Zealand, Germany, Italy and South Korea. Together, they dumped a total of 85,100 TBq (85.1x10 to the 15th Bq) of radioactive waste at over 100 ocean sites, as measured in initial radioactivity at the time of dump.

For comparison:
Global fallout of nuclear weapon tests — 2,566,087x10 to the 15th Bq.[4]

1986 Chernobyl disaster total release — 12,060x10 to the 15th Bq.[5]

2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, estimated total aerial release — 11,346x10 to the 15th Bq.[6]

Fukishima Daiichi nuclear plant cooling water dumped (leaked) to the sea — TEPCO estimate 4.7x10 to the 15th Bq, Japanese Nuclear Safety Commission estimate 15x1015 Bq,[7] French Nuclear Safety Committee estimate 27x10 to the 15th Bq.[8]

Naturally occurring Potassium 40 in all oceans — 14,000,000x10 to the 15th Bq.[9]

One container (net 400 kg) of vitrified high-level radioactive waste has an average radioactivity of 4x10 to the 15th Bq (Max 45x10 to the 15th Bq).

What is the whole?

I read that 777,000 TONS of nuclear waste are going to be dumped into the ocean and kinda got irked a little.

When chatting with folk in Japan, I learned that nothing is going directly into the sea. Contaminated water will be decontaminated and then stored for a year before disposal, which will be, into the sea. During that year, tests will be run to insure the water is decontaminated. If still contaminated, it will be retained until it's decontaminated or levels go down to acceptable for disposal.

Ecological assaults should be made of sterner stuff...

Most of us read the whole article...

Now 770,000 tons seems like a huge number. But that's the weight of the water and not the amount of the radioactive material that could not escape a plastic bag. Convert that to volume and then compare it to the volume of the ocean. Then compare the ppm of the waste and I think it would put the event into its proper perspective and the reason why their is no need for concern, because it is going to be far, far less than the earth's natural radioactive background.

Might be worth noting that as a qualified Physicist and Quantum Chemist, Merkel knew more about the residual risks to be considered than any politician on the planet.;)

Wish this article included such info or another article perhaps.
