ok, so i went and bought a new CD-ROM drive today and put it in and whatnot, but now the stupid fucking puter doesn't acknowledge that it's there! it's a Acer 52x and Win98 is supposed to already have the drivers for it, and i even tried installing the ones that came with it to see if that would help. i looked at the FAQ the website for it has but that didn't help at all.

i can't do anything with it. it's hopeless.

FUCK!!

I say install those drivers that came with it and see it that works. If it doesn't try this:

Did you remove the old drive from your device manager listing?

How is it connected to the computer? Is it on the same controller as your hard drive, connected to a separate controller on your sound card, or does it have it's own controller card.

Is the ribbon cable properly connected between the drive and controller? Did you use the new cable that came with the drive or the old cable from the old drive?

(It is sometimes possible to connect the cable with only one row of pins engaged so that it looks like it's connected, but is actually grounding out all signals from the drive controller.)

Does Windows 98 see anything where the new drive is supposed to be, or does it just act like it does when the drive is disconnected.

I think you need to find a technically (hardware) talented friend or pay a computer shop to determine the problem. It's almost impossible to do something like this via distance communications, because finding the solution is often tactile.

One final thing. If there is another device on the same controller or cable, you may need to change the jumpers to configure it as a master or slave device. (Ok all you wise-acres, can the obvious jokes. Drives really do come in master and slave configurations.)

say a few cuss words fore me scylis!

tomorrow i have to reload windows 98. I've had enough.
it will take a few days to get this this this THING back up to par.

All the updates, all the programs..all the head aches!

you know it just might be the CD-rom is bad...can happen.

good luck!

fgarvb1 off to spend a few days in computor hell.

ha ha ha.. i feel stupid now.

it was set up as a "slave drive" instead of a "master drive".

stupid stupid... *grumbles*

Serves you right.
A proper master never responds to 'slave'.

No need to feel stupid over that. That afterthought was the result of having spent two days trying to get a drive to work before finding out that the documentation showed reversed jumper settings for master and slave modes.

Just keep repeating to yourself, "It's the computer that's stupid, Not me."

WH...

...nicely done.

For all those long distance computer support needs can I suggest Expert City at expertcity.com? For those times when Windows has finally got you beat. For those times when Bill Gates is securely in the seat and they motion for you to throw the switch and you reply "regular or extra crispy"?

Really, I don't know exactly how they work but they have technicians all over the world on line who can connect to your computer and troubleshoot, modify, and correct all sorts of problems. I've had one tech who was crap, but the rest have been really good. Most have been certified MS engineers. You describe the problem and in five minutes or so you'll get bids from techs to help you out. Pick the one you want, whip out the mastercard, and go to town. I've usually used them for Windows problems and networking/ICS problems. They've usually solved the problem for around $15 or so.

One of those tips to store away for midnight crisis.
