Some maligned it in its day as "a bonbon thrown to the workers from their Masters"

Most ignore it as an end to the summer. I like to think of it as a bit more important. We take a moment to reflect on sacrifices of those who fight for the country, I think it's worth taking a moment to think about the sacrifices of the people who make the country.

So if you're in the US - give a moment to think about those folks who brought you The Weekend, who got gunned down marching on the Pullman strike and who got burned out of Triangle. And take a moment to feel accomplished about whatever it is you do to increase the GNP and put food on your table.

OH! You mean it's not just about selling cars, furniture, and big screen TVs?

Actually, as the son of a '30's radical, it was sort of a sacred dxay for my family. Of course, by the late '40s and early 50s that was pretty much enough for people to loose jobs, homes, etc. ---A time when suddenly every other person was a "Commie."

Speaking of such where is Rosa Luxemburg now that she is really needed. Reminds me of the statement in Naomi Klein's The Shock Doctrine about there not being a Marshall Plan to help the USSR become a democracy because the only reason for the Marshall Plan was fear that the USSR might have a lot appeal for a Europe in ruins.

Amazing to think that even Richard Nixon's economic views were to the left of anyone in the present political stew.

Um, on a lighter note, I read the title and thought, the Jews? Yes, I really did, because I have a friend who always says - Jews, we brought you the weekend. You know, shabat, day of rest and all that. Anyway, I'm pretty sure we are not the first people to have invented resting , but it's a phrase that has been stuck in my head ever since.
