This room has been a gerat place to chat / read / and to discuss. It is but appropriate that at a time like this, when many of my friends whom I met here in this room, are struck by this horrible tragedy, I express my heartfelt condolences to all of them.

I agree - I to am a Brit.
Are there any more of us out there who can post our condolences?

Another Brit here, passing on sympathy and hugs to all who have been affected by this awful awful event.

American

Sending out condolences. Also, trying to find a way to move forward.

I'm still just in shock about the whole thing. I've been watching the British news coverage and also getting the American perspective from Gingersnap/*Lazer* whenever she can get through on the 'phone. She says it's strange how quiet and reflective people seem in Chicago, where she's stranded just now. I'm sure there's a similar atmosphere throughout the whole of the US.

My Mum 'phoned saying that the footage on the news was like a scene from 'Independence Day'. As somebody on one report pointed out, if this had been a Hollywood film script it would have been rejected for being too unbelievable. It just makes you realise how impermanent things really are that you've always assumed are permanent. As has been said by many people, the whole World has changed in one day. People of my agegroup in the West have never lived through this kind of uncertainty. In the UK we're fairly used to terrorist attacks on some of our cities but obviously nothing anywhere near as devastating as what happened yesterday (sadly, I think we're going to discover that the death-toll may be in the tens of thousands). For the first time in my life, I get some idea about how people felt here during Blitz air-raid attacks of WW II. Or how people feel in all those far off wartorn countries throughout the world that we constantly see on news reports. We've grown up believing that violence on that scale just doesn't happen here or in America any more. Obviously we now know that it can.

Yesterday, like most people, I just felt numb watching the news coverage. Today, though, the emotion really hit home. I was especially moved by:

-the footage of the young girl in New York searching for her father and her intense relief and joy when she finally found him.

-the horror of the various onlookers watching the second plane crash and the disintegration of the two towers.

-the interview with the aunt of the guy who called from one of the flights to say that he loved his family and he knew that this was the very last time he'd speak to them.

I realise that if Bin Laden is found directly responsible he must be severely dealt with and his training camps destroyed. He's too dangerous and influential a man to have running loose, especially with the Middle East in such a volatile state. The scenes of people celebrating in Palestine and Pakistan is an obvious indication of the anger that many ordinary Muslims around the world feel towards America and other Western countries. Muslims make up the great majority of the world's poor and downtrodden - just the sort of people who are easily brought under the thrall of a charismatic outspoken idol, no matter how insane or psychopathic. Just look at the influence Hitler had on the German people when they were in a state of poverty and low moral. I very much doubt that Bin Laden will stop his campaign of terrorism until someone stops him for good. I just hope this can be done without making him too much of a martyr for fanatisists or by enraging the rest of the Arab world, who we need on our side in this situation. It's obvious that we need to retaliate in some measure. I just hope we can do it without escalating the problem.

It was encouraging to see how the great majority of countries openly condemned yesterday's attacks on the US - especially such unlikely sources as Russia and Palestine (Yassar Arrafat (spl?) today even made the symbolic gesture of giving blood).

Anyway, I just wanted to get all my thoughts out on paper (or screen). I hope you, your friends and your family are all ok. roger XX

Thinking of you all here in England. Well done to all those who have tried to help out in New York and Washington. So many innocent people effected.

Keep your chins up everyone coz its that kind of determination that will win over in the end.

the mood in london has been subdued even passengers on the underground have been nice to each other , this has shocked the whole world, everyone is behind the united states on this one even former enemies such as russia , lets hope we can build on the cameraderie now present

I finally got home today and I am so happy to be back. It has been the strangest week in my life. I went to Chicago with hope in my heart seeking peace and health. Little did I know that I was to have that resolve tested so throughly in the first days. I was touched by the eloquence of Tony Blair as I was by the fear in Arafatt's face. I have felt a great saddness for all those who died and even more for those who mourn. I know this is not a cohesive post but it is reflective of the thoughts that keep spining across my brain. I made a promise to myself today that I would not hate. I believe it gives permission to others to do the same. I pray that we will all learn the true lesson of the last few days. To allow hate and contempt into our hearts gives the least of us the license to do great evil. I hope in the days and weeks to come I can remain centered enough to give hope and love to not only others but myself. Perhaps in this way I can show the people of this world that we are more alike then we are different. It is harder to hate or harm someone you understand.

Roger thank you for saying so eloquently what needs to be heard. I knew I loved you for all the best reasons.

My condolences

to the British and Irish families who also lost loved ones in this tragedy, and to all citizens of the World that have.

:(

I wanted to write this message to convey the genuine mourning, grief, disbelief and anger that is prevalent in everyone I meet. The English are really feeling this with every american man, woman and child. You are in our prayers, and our thoughts.
God Bless
K,

Well said Alex

America you are in my thought's and prayer's

The feelin here in the UK is one of sorrow and saddness, we mourn with you in your darkest hour and we will stand by your side till the fight is won.

At work the the Union jack fly's at half mast alongside the Stars and Stripes .

something sickened me today , all over london flags were flying at half mast apart from one building .........the kuwaiti embassy.
i really do hope that was an oversight on their behalf

our government reports that up to 500 brits may be lost in the tragedy , my friend was in the building across the street , he got out and was moved back , then moved back again , if they hadnt moved him the second time he would have been a casualty too
