Brandon Hoyt stood on top step of the dugout looking out to center field. He had gone 3 for 4 with two home runs in a 5-4 loss in the finals. He was a little dejected that the game and season were over. His parents were in the stands and he knew they were proud of him. They had given up a lot when he was younger to give him the best chance to chase his dream, a major league contract. He smiled thinking of the pro scout who visited his home and talked to him and his parents about the possibility of a pro contract after his last year of college ball. He just needed to keep doing well.
Earlier in the season, his coach had told him of a great opportunity to play summer ball. It was a very competitive league and it was a good way to get pro scouts to look at him since they attended the games. The only catch, he would be about a thousand miles from home. When Brandon and his parents asked about lodging, the coach told them the league had some homes that would host ball players for the summer. He and his parents talked it over and since he didn't have any commitments keeping him in their small town, they agreed he should take this opportunity.
During the plane trip he wondered what it would be like to spend the summer with strangers. Did they have kids? Were they baseball fans or just a host family that liked to help out the coach. He found himself a bit nervous when the plane began it's descent into the airport. He looked at the paperwork given to him and wondered what Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn looked like.
Departing the plane, he noted the airport looked pretty busy and he wondered how he would find his host family. He saw a number of people holding up signs and the squeal of happiness when families or friends found each other. He was beginning to wonder if he was stranded when he saw a large sign being held by a woman who wore a wide smile. Walking quickly to the couple, he smiled, "Hello Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn, I'm Brandon and I'm looking forward to staying with you this summer."
