Alexis Grace was feeling a little overwhelmed. She worked at an architecture firm as one of the junior architects - she was good at her job, and her boss was already considering her for promotion, but she hadn't been there that long. She was still young, and she had a bright future ahead of her... even more so now that her first big project had finally finished.
It had been riddled with issues and bad luck since the very beginning. She wasn't the project manager - no, one of the more experienced architects had taken on that responsibility. Only then, his wife had fallen sick. Poor man. Alexis didn't blame him in the slightest for being unable to take on the full responsibilities of the project, but no one else had been available to take over for him, so he'd ended up having to delegate much more work to his team than had original been planned. The team wasn't big enough, and some of the other, more junior members of the team clearly hadn't expected to have to work 60 hours a week on this thing. In fairness, neither had Alexis, but she couldn't really resent her manager for the extra work.
Then, on top of that, one of the contractors had tried to screw the company, taking money for high-quality materials, buying cheap ones and pocketing the difference. It had been sheer luck that they'd discovered them as quickly as they did, or the project would have been over. As it was, they had to tear down the existing construction and start again. More work.
But it was done now, and as thanks, the whole team had been given the following week off for vacation, which was particularly fantastic for Alexis, since it meant she could go to her high school reunion after all.
She remembered a few weeks ago, getting the invitation by email and then getting a message from her best friend, Luke, over Skype almost immediately afterwards, wanting to know if she'd be there. At the time Alexis had figured she'd need to work - it was a bit too far of a drive to make it there, even if she left work right at 5pm. She'd need a day off in order to make it, and she couldn't afford to take one at the time. He'd been understandably disappointed. Now, though? She was excited to surprise him. They'd been best, best friends since they were little kids. They'd grown up together, practically lived at each other's houses and had been utterly inseparable from the time they were 5 years old until the September after graduating high school, when, sadly, they'd ended up at schools painfully far away from each other. On the other hand, technology was such these days that even that kind of distance couldn't really keep people apart. Instead, their friendship had simply shifted into more of an online one. They Skyped with each other several times a week at least, sometimes up to every day. And when they weren't Skyping, they were texting or IMing each other. It would be hard to claim they weren't just as close as they used to be - the relationship had simply changed a little.
It was still Luke that she'd gone to when her mother had died unexpectedly a few years ago, even though she hadn't been able to physically go to him for hugs. Instead, they sat and talked about her all night, until Alexis had fallen asleep at her computer with the Skype session still going. It was still Luke that she talked to whenever her latest boyfriend was behaving stupidly - and they did that a lot. She thought she had bad luck when it came to jealous boyfriends, but it was probably more accurate to say that any man would be hard pressed not to be jealous of her closeness to Luke. He was the one she talked to after a hard day at work, and the one she celebrated with when something in her life was going particularly well.
Well, she celebrated with him most of the time. This time, at the end of her project, she'd decided against calling him, deciding on a slightly more devious and much more fun idea. She knew he was going to the reunion, and she knew he was sorely disappointed that she couldn't... except now she could. And she was totally going to just show up unexpectedly and surprise him.
She decided to spend her Monday off shopping for a dress for the reunion. It was time-honoured tradition, after all, to show up at the reunion looking your best. Half the fun was seeing who had done well for themselves, in their career, in their love life, and physically. And Alexis had one hell of a body to show off. For most of high school, she'd been a little pudgy - not terribly overweight, but not super fit either. Since leaving high school, she'd taken up dance, which had not only thinned her out into a more lithe, svelt shape, but had given her a certain kind of grace and confidence, too. But more problematically, her natural body shape during high school had been rather... round. She'd been somewhat of a late bloomer, to say the least, with only limited breasts and no hips at the time. Now, though? She had lovely curves - a generous chest, a narrow waist and flaring hips. She'd let her once-short hair grow out into long, lovely caramel curls, and the nasty flares of acne she used to have were cleared up entirely, leaving her with soft, lightly tanned skin. In short, she'd grown out of that awkward teenage phase with one hell of a vengeance.
She ended up with a pretty blue dress, short enough to be tempting but long enough to be appropriate. And Luke's favourite colour was blue. She smiled at the thought of seeing him in person for the first time in years, and set about booking a hotel in their hometown for the night of the reunion. Feeling a little giddy, and anxious to go, she had trouble sleeping the next night, only to get up early the following morning and set out.
---------------------
The reunion looked the way she had expected. It was cheesy - the venue had been decorated with pictures from their graduating year book, and the DJ was playing music released on the year of their graduation - but in a charming kind of way. Alexis was unreasonably nervous. She'd already been getting some looks from people who either didn't recognize her at all or were baffled to realize just how much she'd changed since high school, but she didn't care about any of them. She wanted to see Luke. It hadn't really struck her how much she missed his physical presence until now. Her heart was hammering in her chest, and she gripped her drink tightly, her eyes scanning the room for him as she walked in. She couldn't imagine wanting anything at the moment but to just... be with him.
