I know this is not connected with Erotica, but I need help fast with this, and I didn't know where to turn.

I live in Prague in the Czech Republic. We are having provider trouble at the moment and we need to find out which provider is the fastest when their pages are opened from abroad.

I need the measurements of connection speeds from different parts of the world - from the UK, northern, western, eastern and southern Europe, from the far east, from Australia, south America and from the US and Canada. That's why I sent this message because I hope I will find here some people willing to help me.

I would like you, please, to open the five websites which follow, and time the loading time for each page - the full loading time of the page, and the time it takes for the page to start to appear.

Then, if you could send me these download times with the time of measurement. Please, include your connection speed (and type, and provider, if you know them), your country of origin.

The websites are:
http://www.worldonline.cz
http://www.volny.cz
http://www.pragonet.cz
http://www.luko.cz
http://www.kpn-qwest.cz

Thank you very much for your time and if you could reply to this as soon as possible, it would really help me a lot.

Modem: 56K
ISP: Easynet
Type: Landline (is that what you mean?)
Country of Origin: UK

Worldonline - 91 secs
Volny - 37 secs
Pragonet - infinity (wouldn't load)
Luko - 28 secs
kpn-qwest - 28 secs

To time the downloads I used the ultra-specific technique of 1-elephant-2-elephant. So you may want to take that into account. Also the modem may be a 56K but the computer is relatively slow.

That was really good work-prevention. Have you got any more assignments you could send me? Please?!

That's another 28 second one. Weird. Maybe 28 is the meaning of life or something.

Thanks. If any others would help, I'd be grateful - now that I have UK, may USA, Oz, and Japan.

Any other bids? I still need more tests, if anyone can do some more tests, I'd be grateful.

Modem: 56K
ISP: AOL
Type: Landline
Country of Origin: US

1- 39 seconds
2- 26 seconds
3- 17 seconds
4- 20 seconds
5- 16 seconds

I also used the scientific "Flagg" elephant method. Thought this might keep the results from being skewed...as much as it could be asking for help from a crowd on a porn site. :)

Am I the only one who's a bit skeptical?
Do you think he could be getting paid for us clicking on these things?

I am most certainly not being paid for clicks. Use tracert if you are scared about that. I am serious here. Go to http://www.atweb.cz and read about what my company does. Our page is too slow. I am not a con man and am certainly not being paid. I have my own personal site at http://books-online.webjump.com where I try to show my hobby - writing novels. I can even give you my phone number to work if you like!

A quarm is a worry or hurt. I wrote Syndicate - the book - but I based the character on myself. I moved from England to the Czech Republic not long after my girlfriend was murdered. I had a nervous breakdown and decided that I no long want to live in such a violent country.

This is driving me stupid. I can't find it in my dictionary and m-w.com says there is now such word in the dictionary. Is it English? I am gonna beat my head on the desk. How aggravating.

Wait, you don't mean qualm do you?

I'm a nasty perfectionistic twit. I thought it was a word. Quarm looks like it ought be a word. I'm kinda disappointed that it isn't. :( Another Q word woulda been cool.

Man, wouldn't it Killer. Should would have helped me with my triple letter points.

We need more Q words with Js and Zs and Xs in them and no Us in them

Request for response times

Slater,

Only one problem trying to select a provider this way.
Response times vary dependant on the computer network, computer system being used, and your workstation. Further complicating things...it's all dynamic, constantly changing.

I would call your local providers and ask them the last time they upgraded their primary connection to the Internet. Chances are the last one that did it has the best network connection. You might also ask whether they web cache any content locally which will improve response...but it depends what you want to access.

Good luck.
