It had been a crazy day for Angie, up early to take the boys to football practice started her day on the wrong foot. Normally not an early riser, she had missed her coffee and tub time. On the way home, the CD player in her new SUV had locked up, neither playing nor ejecting her new 3rd Force disc.

The housekeeper was late, Angie needed to go shopping, get her hair and nails done. As much as she loved the parties she and Sean attended, they always put her in spin. So many things to do, so many details to remember.

If it were not for the phone call she received from her friend David, she likely would have declined the inviation to the Van Fossen's party. But David was back in town from his latest expedition, and had told Angie he had a small gift for her.

David was an old, and true friend. They had met when he first took a position at the college. Angie had been serving on one of the community advisory boards for the theater. She had met him at a performance. He posessed an amazing magetism that drew everyone to him. It was not just his boyish good looks, it was his charm and wit. Goodness knows he had his share of female company, but he seemed content being single. Of course his constant travels for research made it difficult to live a normal life.

At the end of the afternoon, the boys were home from practice, eating pizza and playing video games. Sean was late as always. But she had called his cell phone three times and he was, at least, on the way home.

In less than an hours time she would be among her friends, and she would finally learn what suprise David had in store for her.

I stood chatting with a small group of guests, laughing with them as they imagined the story I had just shared...

"Really..." I tried to convince them, then gave up with a grin as I knew it was useless. "Anyone for a drink?"

Moving to the bar that the Van Fossen's had generously supplied I ordered a drink from the smiling barmaid behind the serving counter and touched the hidden pocket in my blazer for the tenth time that evening.

I hoped Angie would enjoy it...When I saw it among the relics I couldn't imagine it on any other womans neck than hers...And the story that was told with the necklace was fitting as well.

Looking around I checked the time on my watch and smiled inwardly...Angie was running late as usual...Her life was one minor catastrophe after another, requiring endless energy that I still wondered where she drew it from...Now if I could just crack that shy exterior and find the woman I knew hid beneath it...

Moving to a group of men and women I listened in as half interested...passing time and waiting..my thoughts drifting to Angie and how different we were...

She was dedicated to her children...I didn't know the first thing about them,

She listened to a "newer" form of music that I regarded as noise, preferring the soothing sound of Bob Seger or Jim Croce...

Her pride was in the accomplishments of her family, mine was in the discovery of an ancient secret or artifact...

Looking towards the door I smiled and excused myself from the group, trying not to look too eager as I moved towards the large homes front doors and the person who had finally arrived...

Sean's lexus pulled to a halt outside the Van F's house... 45 mintues late.. not too bad... Angie flipped the visor down and checked her makeup for the 10th time during the 5 minute drive. Sean sighed softly and walked around the car to open her door.

Sean was the perfect gentleman in every regard and of course he treated Angie like a queen. A position she subconsiously felt she was fully entitled to.

As they entered the door, Angie could see David through the many guests. His skin dark from the tropical sun, his hair almost white blond, his eyes as deep and rich a blue as ever.

Their eyes met, she felt a deep warm blush spread up her chest and neck. Angie had worn an unusually low plunging dress tonight. Even Sean had commented on the amount of her creamy soft cleavage that was exposed. As her blush deepened she turned away. Grasping at a passing glass of white wine, she slipped between two of her gossipy friends and stepped out onto the elevated deck overlooking the lake.

Half hoping Sean would join her she could see that wouldnt happen, he was deep in conversation with several of his friends. Shop-talk never ended for Sean...

Looking out over the pond, she could see the stars reflecting on the smooth water, and almost imagine she was far away.

I had to remind myself that Angie and I were just friends as I walked out to the terrace...Her profile...the dress she wore...and the look on her face all combined to show me what she COULD look like...not just occasionaly, but all the time...

Night and day...I reminded myself...and approached her quietly, leaning against the bannister before I spoke...

"What do you see in the stars, pretty lady? Or are you dreaming of a midnight swim to paradise?"

I smiled as she turned, the surprised look on her face making her cheeks glow in the pale light...
