Like the idea of friens with benefits

I like this story idea. Makes me think of the story of Madame de Pompadour for some reason. She was the mistress of the king but had a cordial relationship with the queen which is said to be part of the reason she lasted longer then earlier mistresses. The queen had said if there must be a mistress better it be her. The freindship eased the kings quilt and allowed him a better relationship with his children. She brought joy to the kings life even going hunting and other activties. And even though she was his mistress it wasn't about the sex, there where years without, She was someone the king could talk to.

A more modern version might be a man happily married but maybe something missing in there relationship that the wife knows she can't give but sees him happy with one of the female freinds.
