FRENCH VANDALS have now desecrated a World War I memorial dedicated to British war dead:


The words "Rosbifs [British] go home! Saddam Hussein will win and spill your blood" were painted in French over the base of the cemetery's main monument - an obelisk topped by a cross.

On one side was a swastika and the words "death to the Yankees".

Also daubed were the words "dig up your garbage, it is fouling our soil," and "Bush, Blair to the TPI (International Court of Justice)".

Some 11,000 British dead are buried at Etaples, which lies on the Channel coast around 24 kilometres south of Boulogne.


French officialdom is rightly deploring this, but after the climate of hatred that Mr. Chirac's government has created, it's no great surprise. And these guys, too, aren't "antiwar" -- they're just on the other side.

A poll in Le Monde also said that 1 in 3 Fench wish that the Iraqis win the war and the coalition loose.

Ok polls are not an accuarate barometer of the average Frenchman but it does stick in yur throat - especially after the sacrifice of British and American soldiers who liberated france 50 years ago.

If the French want our dead out of their land - I say lets do it. Exhume the lot of them and give them a resting place where they will be repected - not abused

Ok I agree you cannot tar a nation soley on the act of a few individuals.

It just seems to be part of a trend that is coming out of France at the moment -

Oh and the graves of the dead are looked after by the War Graves Comission - which is largley funded by us anyway

After a period of time graves are no longer protected against disturbance, I have seen half a local graveyard 'Developed' into a housing astate as the graves were all over 200 years old and there was money to be made.

reality is Business interests come first be they french or American.

You misquoted me. I didn't say anything about the French Foreign Legion. If I had, I would have remembered that they too have war dead fighting for freedom and democracy.

As for being too close - perhaps I remember too much history. We have reminders of French invasions. They have reminders of ours.

The US should remember its own history. Without the French you wouldn't have won your war of independence.

France has never invaded Britian, to the best of my knoweldge. THe Normans did it who were actually from the Nordic countries in 1066. England (as it was then) invaded them, Henry V I believe and the triumph of the English Longbow.

But I'd be very shocked if people were alive that could remember that invasion.

The towns of Sandwich and Winchelsea show the signs of French invasions. Napoleon tried but the Royal Navy prevented him. Until the 1960s the Mayor of Sandwich wore a black robe in memory of a former Mayor who died defending Sandwich against the French. Now he has a red robe (again) after signing a twinning agreement with a French town.

The "Mary Rose" sank off Portsmouth while sailing out to attack a French invasion fleet.

Defences were built all round the SE coasts of England to defend against a possible invasion by Napoleon III.

When Britain signed an Entente Cordiale with France before the First World War it was a shock. We had been enemies of France for hundreds of years.
