French Prime Minister François Bayrou survived two no-confidence votes in parliament on Wednesday, winning some breathing space after less than two months in office. However, the votes by no means secure his long-term future.
On Wednesday, 128 lawmakers voted in favour of the first motion, significantly short of the 289 votes needed.
Far-left lawmakers have introduced two no-confidence motions against the prime minister after he invoked special constitutional powers to force through the 2025 budget.
Going into the vote, Bayrou was nowhere near having a majority in the National Assembly, with the Socialists and far-right National Rally (RN) both saying they would not back the no-confidence motion.
