Free software recommendations

After years of trying with many different writing software, Obsidian is the best one for me. While there's some friction to synchronize (free version), I don't care much about keeping things in sync, especially now since I'm using Linux on an x86 machine, and I can't run Obsidian. I do run it on my phone though, and it's perfect. No complaints there.

Ghostwriter is not as powerful as Obsidian, but it gets the job done for putting words on the screen without distractions. Manuskript is the one I use to keep the Markdown files organized. For formatting I just go with LibreOffice Writer.

I use Ghostwriter and it works well enough, although it does tend to gobble up memory once you break into 20k+ words.

Write shorter stories I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It never occurred to me to use anything but LibreOffice, mostly because I am already very familiar with it.

I still use Libre Office for the actual writing but I love, love, love Obsidian as a note-taking and outlining tool.

I used to use Evernote or OneNote but they seemed to get slower or worse with updates over the years. Obsidian has been a great improvement

I use Joplin for note taking since it works on all my devices, syncs well and has encryption. Initial drafts are usually done in Focuswriter then in MS Word with ProWritingAid for the final edits and prooflistens.

simplenote for notetaking as it is cloud based and syncs across IOS, MacOS and windows. For actual writing i'm using MSWord/Office 365 as that is what we have for work. Should i be looking for more?

OnlyOffice for writing & markup, then copy/paste into Kate to double newline everything, then paste into the Lit editor. Then re-read it and panic with all the errors and manually try to keep my OO version synch'd with the Lit version to satisfy compulsive neccessity and prevent my universe from imploding. I used to write with Manuskript, but it was really unstable and worlds literally crashed and burned before my eyes. Which makes me wonder if God has started using it lately? Bloody freeloader.

I'm looking for a note-taking/story organization app which runs on my local system - or has "bulletproof" privacy EULA.

I use Joplin for casual writing (like my Literotica stuff). It runs on everything and synchronize seamlessly via DropBox to all my devices.

I used to have an Evernote subscription for this purpose, but Joplin can do the same, and it's free, open source and encrypted. So I switched and haven't looked back since.

For more serious writing I mostly avail myself of Libre Office...

The one thing I miss about using a Mac is the Bean application: a nice, simple word processor (rather than a text editor aimed more at coders) with a wordcount window at the bottom and a very small set of system demands. Perfect.
If I had the hax0r d00d skills I'd try to rip off the code to get it to work on a Pi or x86 Linux...

Have you thought about putting one of the minimal text editors that'll run off a thumb drive on a password protected USB stick or memory card? If you're worried about security, that's about as bomb proof as you can get.

Yes, that is what I am doing now. I'm looking for a better editor - I'm leaning towards the portable version of Joplin on an encrypted USB. Thanks
