Sima, thanks for thinking of me. I really want for naught. I hope my holiday to Venice and Yorkshire proves fun and safe (the flying there bits) is all. P. :)

As I sat there, the little birds began to gather in the branches of the spruce thicket by my log. They landed and called their mindless calls, went to the floor of the forest and back up, crossed the trail and recrossed, twittering and chirping. Gradually they approached and surrounded me.

Such a threat the predator was! How fearsome! They stood on my log, they walked along the barrel of my weapon. Two of them, at one point, were perched on my rifle barrel.

I missed this post somehow. A hazard of scrolling while sleep-deprived.

Maybe the birds were using you to scare the owl away?

A friend who used to run overnight diving charters in the Fla Keys told me that when the boat was far from land, migrating birds would sometimes use it for a resting spot. A sparrow or chicadee - something tiny and exhausted, and many miles from the nearest sandbar - flew through the open door of his cabin one morning and sat at the foot of his cot. Dozed there until my friend left the cabin, then hopped up onto the pillow and stayed there for a while.

It's amazing how many wild animals still haven't been warned about us.

The rhythmic clip-clop of horses hooves over the icy roads.

The gentle fall of snow, drop of temperature, loss of feeling in your nose, and ears, and fingers.

The delightful odor of oats working their way through the horses.
