France recalls ambassadors from U.S. and Australia over canceled submarine deal

Paris — French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Friday evening that France is immediately recalling its ambassadors to the U.S. and Australia in a backlash over a canceled submarine deal.

Le Drian said in a statement that the decision, on request from President Emmanuel Macron, "is justified by the exceptional seriousness of the announcements" made by Australia and the U.S.

He said the cancellation by Australia of a big contract to buy French conventional submarines in favor of nuclear-powered subs built with U.S. technology is "unacceptable behavior."

Of course this isn't the first time the incompetence of the Biden administration created an "historical first." Joe Biden is completely out to lunch on everything, especially foreign policy.

Australia decided to buy American subs instead of French, which does not necessarily have anything to do with any WH decision -- and if it did, it's hard to imagine any MIC-beholden POTUS pushing the deal the other way.

Macron has an election very soon. He wants to be 'leader' of Europe with Merkel's retirement. Last week UK screwed the French on a French Vaccine deal (predictable) Oz has been telling the French for at least 2 years that they were failing on the old Subs contract

Conclusion: Macron had a need to assert that over developed sense of French self importance. It will calm down in a while - and if it does not - so what.

Let me give you an alternate spin on this and it is only peripherally related to the French government.

This is all about Australia entering into an contract with a French ship building consortium regarding the new class of Australian submarines. Australia's sub fleet is about to go tits up, they are quickly approaching their design end of life. Australia also plays a critical role in the coming conflict with China. Regionally EVERYONE needs Australia to have capable subs in the water and ready to respond.

The contract was for X dollars (Australian dollars I presume) per sub and the cost has already ballooned to 3 or 4 X dollars (actually 1.5 but climbing rapidly) and the first keel hasn't been laid down yet. Australia is/was so mad that they began looking for ways out of the contract. Add to that that the French consortiums design had been hacked. The project had lost all pretense of security.

On top of that Australia always wanted nuke boats but the political climate in 2016 more or less prohibited that happening. The French design was such that the boats could be converted to nuke power at a later date. (A theory that has yet to be tested by anyone anywhere.)

The deal with the US/UK gets Australia boats within a reasonable time frame. Both the Virginia class (US) and the Astute class (UK) are still active programs, although the UK program is winding down. So in theory there would be no start up costs. Australia will end up with fewer boats but much more capable boats with significant increase in range and time at sea.

The French government has their panties in a twist because they going to lose a ton of revenue going forward but their lack of oversight on the consortium is what has led to this state of affairs. Regardless of the French posturing about 'security and alliances' in the end this is all about the money and in that regard the French screwed themselves by screwing over the Australians.
