And also because the proposition of a tax bracket of 75% only concerns the part of a tax-payer's income that is above 1 million euros and therefore would have absolutely no effect on the tax paid by the majority of the French working population.

I only addressed the question of why a majority voted for Hollande because I don't have a looking-glass into the future that can tell me if this proposed tax will ever pass through the National Assembly, let alone how many rich French will leave the country if it does.

Having said that, this is just one thought. I come from a country that is infamous for its taxes. At one point, Astrid Lindgren (author of Pippi Longstocking and other childhood-comfort-food books) ended up with a marginal tax bill of 102%. Yes - 102% tax. She paid for the privilege of working and it became known as the "Pomperipossa effect".

But in spite of these very high tax-rates, surprisingly few mega-wealthy Swedes actually left the country. Maybe that's because most people earning that kind of money don't actually ever pay the full tax rate of anything. Thanks to their accountants, they end up paying a compromise percentage that they find they can live with.
And maybe also because most people actually find it hard to leave their country of birth, their family and network of friends behind.
But this is just speculation on my part...
