my area of texas has been pounded by torrential rains since saturday. i've received over 12 1/2" here and parts of san antonio have received 16-19" in the same time period. this area is one of texas' top tourist attractions. we have 6 or 7 major rivers that attract millions of tubers, kyakers and such each year and the holidays are the busiest.
the most popular river is the guadelupe which flows out of canyon lake at a normal rate of 100 to 200 cubic feet per second. this morning the lake is going to spill over the spillway/dam at an estimated rate of 50,000 cubic feet per second. this will fill the river to a level 30 feet above normal. no partyin' there. the river that runs through my development is 20 feet higher than normal and all of the formal celebrations here have been cancelled with the possible exception of the vfw rodeo and dance. them cowboys love the mud.
this may sound like a rant. far from it. what it is is an attempt to thank all of you that have started patriotic threads this morning. the birthday of our nation is a special day but for me it has always been a day of introspection and a day of thanks for having been born here and for the freedoms that we enjoy. . i was proud to serve my country in the 60's and would do it again if they could figure out how i could help. i might cook a burger and quaff a couple of brews this evening but sharing your tributes and memories is all the celebration i really need.
thanks
