Andrew looked out over the land below, it was surprisingly green a welcome sight. Looking around the smallish plane used to transport those's traveling link flights, or at least thats what they called them back home , in America he had no idea what they called this short journeys, he caught sight of normal people discussing normal things okay in funny accents but he'd get used to them , he'd have to.
For a country that used English he wasn't sure if American's actually spoke the same language he did. Still thats part of the learning curve, and it was a big learning curve not only had his own accent caused some issues in the 4 hours he'd already been in the states, but he had to learn all about college knowing the movies he had been feed about college life would have invaribly skipped things.
Then there was the big one , getting used to calling football soccer, girdiron football, rounders baseball and basketball, well basketball but there sure was going to be no cricket played at this college or on TV , he'd miss that.
The plane started its descent and talk seemed to drop off around the plane as people realised that holidays were over now, a sobering thought when many of them had work the following day. Andrew knew he had his own challenges ahead.
It was in many ways dumb luck that he was here, six months earlier a coach of a University Soccer Team had been on vacation in New Zealand and had seen Andrew play and then watched him several more times before offering a scholarship by post, his parents had been thrilled, his sister over the moon when she found out what College it was. Andrew looked back on that mini-celebration and shuddered.
Going to America was effectively giving up on the small hope that he had in a career in England and going to this college meant seeing 'her' again.
She had come into his life when he was 14 an exchange student in her last year of high school he'd been absolutely besotted with her and of course had made himself look like a total idiot trying to impress her and also trying AND failing to get in her pants. Even explaining that laws were different in New Zealand had infact only served to gross her out.
In hindsight she had been right to reject him but it had been heartbreaking at the time, now she was the only person he knew in this country and she probably hated him.
The plane landed and he got off quickly having been fortunate to be near the front of the plane, making his way towards the passenger exit with his bags he had no idea who would pick him up.
His Warriors Jersey with its Maori back-stiching drew looks but done that said 'you must be Andrew'
