I saw this today on TV (HBO) and it made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

First off, they don't allow people who are mildly mentally retarded into the military, and I don't understand why he had to grow a beard and run across the country.

:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

Do you think Tom Hank's performance was oscar-worthy?

Ironically, Michael Conner Humphreys, who played the young Forrest Gump, actually joined the Army as an adult. He served one year of his enlistment in Iraq in an unpopular war. He mirrored his movie character image in this way.

Do you think people are given IQ tests prior to enlistment? (I fucking wish...)

Forest ran because "Ah just felt like runnin'". He's not a smart man. But he's a fast man. And more over he's a steadfast, dedicated, strong man.

Forest was given a set of barriers in his life and "running" is how he overcame them. Consider the metaphor from when he was a child and had to wear leg braces. The kids made fun of him, so he started running... and running so hard the braces flew off and he never had to wear them again. How did he save Lt. Dan in Nam'? By not just running for himself, but running for others as well!

Forest ran an the end of the movie to clear his head. Thinkin' about Jenn-ay was not an easy thing for him - so he ran and did what he was good at anyway to overcome the setbacks in his life.

What do you do when you're presented with obstacles in life, Mike? Do you let them hold you back? Or do you RUN!??

You do realize that Forrest Gump wasn't a real person, right? I only ask, because you keep bringing him up. The world needs more Forrest Gumps, if you ask me. Can you see a world full of people, who aren't whining about how limited they are, but are out there, just taking life one chocolate at a time :)

He grew a beard because facial hair is awesome, and he ran because he obviously enjoyed good cardio :) Anywho, I think it's a great movie and I still crack up everytime I watch it.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see--the 1994 Oscar winners should be announced any day now.

People with special needs/learning disabilities/below average intelligence have almost absolutely insurmountable barriers set in front of them in life.

Their options in terms of work and education are extremely limited.

Do you think Forrest Gump could have gone to college and made something significant of himself?

I don't think so.

It's an irrelevant question. He made something of himself without college.

A college degree is a prerequisite for everything nowadays. Even the military is turning down people without bachelors degrees. Along with police and fire departments!

No degree = dead in the water.

I can't help you, I've never watched it as Hanks is my least favorite actor.

You're dead in the water regardless.

You are a retarded lazy fuck who sits around making excuses.

Abort yourself, you will only be a strain on society and perhaps the gene pool.

This is just an excuse you use that keeps you in a cage.

Tell that to L. McClure.

He was beat to death with a Pupil stick .

There is no way on earth he could have past a IQ test or a Psych exam. to get in any damned thing.

As for letting him have a gun...You MUST be fucking crazy.

A college degree is a litmus test for employers.

It is virtually impossible of find a decent paying job or career without one. And because of the economy, people with graduate degrees + 20 years work experience are being turned down for jobs.

Most people can't go to college for financial reasons, the reason I can't go is purely psychological/intellectual.

Go into any business or office building, and the first things they ask you during an interview is whether or not you have a college degree or college experience. In fact, they won't even give you an interview if you don't have a degree. They will hang up on you or politely show you the door.

In today's society, college has become essential to finding even the most basic employment. Otherwise you'll be stuck sweeping floors, digging ditches, and flipping burgers for the rest of your life.

Employers also take into account what kind of college you went to, and demand to see a full transcript of your grades. Some of them even require masters degrees for entry-level positions.

There are a few decent-paying blue collar jobs which require no degree, but are extremely difficult, physically and psychologically strenuous, and have long hours. It isn't a cozy 9 to 5 shift at an office.

They (employers) will immediately hire a Harvard graduate over someone who went to a state college. Young adults not only have to finish high school, but college as well, before they can begin any kind of working career.

To put it simply, you have to spend tens/hundreds of thousands of dollars, plus 4-8 years of your life, before you can have a small chance landing a job (competing with dozens of other people) in an office staring at a computer screen making $40,000 per year. While some unionized blue collar careers which require no degree offer salaries >$80,000 + benefits and retirements. Labor unions give people who can't go to college for whatever reasons (usually financial) decent livings and an alternative to the crude and unfair job market.. It also prevents big corporations from taking advantage of it's employees. But some of these jobs can still be difficult to get

I could go out and get a job, but it would be menial labor with extremely low wages. And I would be stuck doing that until I can earn a degree. So is it really worth the effort? People with mild intellectual/cognitive disabilities usually don't make anything significant of themselves. And it's a terrible shame that there are so few alternatives to a successful career without college.

Litster JamesBJohnson said that the only people who really benefit from college are doctors, lawyers, engineers, and scientists.
