I submitted a story this weekend in RTF format specifically to keep some words in italics. However when the story appeared all the formatting had disappeared. Was this an error or on purpose?

If you want italics in a story here, then you have to submit the story with the appropriate HTML coding in place. RFT won't do it.

The appropriate coding for italics here, on this site, are these brackets: [ ] that contain an "I". The closing code is the same thing but insert a foward slash "/" before the "I".

I'd write it out for you but it wouldn't show, like this.

You can fix the coding and resubmit the story. Be sure you label it "RESUBMIT ONLY: CORRECTED STORY" or something like that so Laurel clearly understands it's not a new story.

(You can practice this coding in BB posts, if you like, to get it right before sending the corrected copy to Laurel.)

Whoa, there!

Square brackets [ ] are correct for the bulletin board, but for the HTML in a submission you want angle brackets < >. So far as I know the other parts of the code are the same, ie use <i> to start your italics, </i> to end.

If you submit in Word or RTF format, you need to advise Laurel that there are Italics, Bold Face, Special characters (umlauts, accent marks, etc) so that she can insure they translate to HTML right.

If you wish, you can use HTML in your story to save Laurel the time required to post your story. If you do use HTML in your story, submit it through the cut and paste box or as an ASCII text file (*.txt).

The cut and paste box is the best way to submit, because it allows you to preview the story before submitting although it is limited in the size of story it can accept to around 15,000 characters.

If you have Word 97/2000, you can "save as HTML, reopen as a text file, edit our the HTML header and footer code, to get the HTML coding for Italics and other special formatting needs inserted into your story. I haven't tried this yet, so I'm not sure exactly what other codes you will need to edit out, but with global serach and replace operations, it should be fairly simple to accomplish if you know anything about HTML files.

angled brackets...

...are definitely the way to go for story submissions, FC.

Missing basic stuff like that, it's probably time i got out of the advice-giving biz!

I'll try it

Thanks for the info all. I know how to format HTML, just didn't know that it was OK to do so.

Chapter 1 of my story WAS formatted properly, so I was surprised when Chapter 2 wasn't. I guess Laurel didn't notice.
