With all the other things going on this Spring I forgot to post my annual call for the elimination of high school dances and proms.

School dances have NOTHING to do with the educational purpose of a public school, open up a school to sexual harassment liability, distract from the educational environment, cause students who don't get asked to feel excluded, and schools have no business encouraging students to pair up romantically or sexually. If they wish to do this, they need to do it on their own time.

School dances are archaic remnants from a simpler bygone age, make no sense in the 21st century, and have no place in the modern school. Its time to end the archaic practice and eliminate these outdated relics of the past.

Most high schools are out for the summer and proms are so last month.

Wonder if the op had bad proms? I had good and ok experiences. The proms were always outside of school times.

I agree!

I intentionally never went to any proms though we crashed the prom breakfast once.

I did attended two formal dinner dances. The first I was tricked into and the second was at a University and I did it for a friend. We went to the dinner, and went to a carnival in full dress instead of the dance part.

I skipped my prom to go take a Mustang GT owners money.....he just KNEW there was no way a 1.3L lil japmobile was gonna take down his big burly V8!!!

It ain' even gawt pistons!!

Keep getting held back and I'm sure you'll eventually get asked.

I would think based on this same logic that schools would be on firmer ground for banishing football. The same educational purpose and distraction arguments apply, kids who don't make the team can also feel excluded and "shamed" and those who succeed occasionally suffer concussions.

On the other hand, star varsity athletes do tend to get laid at the prom.

I am for that, ban football!

My high school didn't have football, I did play on the soccer team though.

While we are banning, let's ban field hockey, it's a vicious sport.

Because that's an issue that we need to focus on.

School dances have NOTHING to do with the educational purpose of a public school,

Because teaching students how to socialize in a safe mostly drug free environment is not educational.

open up a school to sexual harassment liability,

Which is possible everyday when boys and girls are together. Be it at a dance, on a field trip or in History class. Maybe we should separate the genders except for breeding, than no one can be sexually harassed.

distract from the educational environment,

Dances are not during instruction time so how do they distract from learning?

cause students who don't get asked to feel excluded,

Because we all know everyone gets a promotion or a raise or accepted to the college of their choice. No one ever gets disappointed, or rejected. Not something anyone needs to deal with.

and schools have no business encouraging students to pair up romantically or sexually.

Because when you mix boys and girls the only reason they pair up or have sex is to dance...

I'm sure they do.

School dances keep kids off the streets and give them a relatively safe place to hang out with friends, and to interact with people they go to school with. Schools without these dances have greater discipline problems and lower attendance rates.

These dances are also self financed by the purchase of tickets and food, allowing the school to use any excess money to help cover budget short falls.

If you don't want to go to Prom fine, but don't tell my kids they can't. It's their choice not yours.

That's probably why they don't have dances DURING class hours
Were you just left out a lot during your years spent in school? You seem quite angry about this.

My school had a Senior All Night party in the school. On a Friday night we were to be there by 9pm and had to stay all night til 6 am. They had a dance, catering with a ton of food, movies, art classes open, a hypnotist, magic show, a comedian and chilling with your friends and classmates. And you know what...EVERYONE got along and co-mingled. People ended up hanging out with and talking to students they never paid mind to during school...year book signing and a lot of laughter and fun.
Good times :cathappy:

Be cool renard for school dances and proms are a declining event, schools all over the nation are doing away with them because of student lack of interest. All kids want to do today is sit on their asses and text.

any sport that involves fit girls running around in short skirts getting all sweaty is alright in my book.
