Based on my "Aunt Lilith" and "The Angel Next Door" stories, this has to do with the imminence of an Apocalypse that is very close to happening.....and can only be stopped or caused by a certain mortal. And both sides are trying to recruit him for their cause.
Who is he? He's Vito Gallio, a Roman Catholic priest with a double life as a philanderer and an even more dangerous secret- an illegitmate daughter now 20 years old. She's the fruit of an early incident of breaking his priestly vows with a partisan during WW2. He has blamed God for her mother's death and has retaliated by acting even more on his potent lusts. Not knowing of their daughter's birth, he since emigrated to San Francisco and served as a teacher in a Catholic school.
Oh, and the year is 1965. Vito still deals with the guilt of being a less than celibate priest, but he also still feels a bit of anger at his Lord. He has 4 rules: no crimes, no adultery, no nuns, and no homosexuality. It's strict fornication, done mainly to be a nuisance but not commit a mortal sin. He'll take his chances with Purgatory, but refuses to risk going to Hell. Not that he has found it so easy to follow his rules. He has only done so by finding whores quickly to relieve the desires.
What Vito doesn't know is that his soul's fate could affect the balance of power between Jehovah and Belial, the chief Gods of the Elohim, the race of Gods who dominate the Cosmos.
Why? Because he has inherently conflicted loyalties. He is sworn to Jehovah, but he is literally a son of Belial, a direct spawn of the enemy of the Christian God. Therefore, at stake is not Heaven or Hell, since the latter doesn't exist, anyway. It's also why his sexual urges are so strong and why he resents the ban on satisfying them.
Instead, the gambit is whether or not he can refuse to commit a worse sin in the eyes of Jehovah than simply fornication: incest. If he does, he will be acceptable as a soldier of Belial but automatically shunned by Jehovah, due to his birthright. It will be an act of formally switching his allegiance, though he can't know it yet. If he doesn't, he will be recruited as the first of the Nephilim to ever serve Jehovah in the Host of Heaven.
To tempt him to commit incest, Belial has sent Lilith, his daughter and chief of his Nephilim, his angelic operatives. Jehovah prefers to use a stick instead of a carrot, and has sent a visionary nun with a strong and naive faith in her revelations to warn him away. She thinks that he is in danger of becoming the Antichrist, when he's not.
What few know is that she is the daughter mentioned above. And there is a much greater chance of a even greater sin committed by Vito: mating with a sister, the daughter of Belial.
If he doesn't sleep with a relative, the Apocalypse will happen, because he will breach the most ancient law of the Elohim...never betray one's kindred. And that will eliminate Belial's entire family, including Vito's daughter and Vito himself. Jehovah will prevail and usher in his own Day of Judgment.
