SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo Inc. will make their instant-messaging programs work together, a partnership that could give the companies more power to compete against market leader America Online.

I just hope that they choose yahoo's emotes over those goofy ones that MS uses.

No shit. Plus, I like the feature of being able to send offline message. It doesn't exist with the others.

I think yahoo is definitly the better of the two. But MS is larger and has more influence. Hoping they don't fuck this up.

ICQ's had that forever.

As to the whole chatter war thing. I use Trillian, so I don't really care what the other person uses. It always fits.

Amen to that. Except I can't get my webcam to play nice with Trillian

Yeah, that's the real problem with interoperability. The basic messaging is easy but it's the addons that tend to be killers. Especially when those addons are covered by NDA's and Patents. <looks accusingly at Mickeysoft>

The problem is that the big boys make money by vendor lockin. Being interoperable would just cost them money, so it's in their interest to make it as hard as possible for programs like Trillian to exist. (Edit: All the while exclaiming from the highest towers that they are the ones creating/using/supporting open standards.)
