I got bombed! It sucks big time. I hope they catch it. Isn't Laruel and Manu pretty good about fixing those?

I went from 11 votes and a 4.91 rating to 12 votes and a 4.58 rating. I think that's a bomb. I'm not really sure though. Can someone confirm?

By my calculations you got a 0.95 vote!

That sounds rather improbable. But, seems to be accurate. So, is this something they sweep for and fix? I think someone just saw I had a high rating on a new story and wanted to crash me.

Hey Rika!! Long time no see.

If you pm one of them you might get that fixed sooner.

I know exactly how you feel. I've been dive-bombed many times. Those people suck ass!! Fuckin trolls. Grrrr.

Maybe the 0.05 was withheld for tax purposes.

Seriously, it's a rounding error.

I PMed Laurel. It was a very diplomatic PM. I don't think there will be any problems. I just like to know that it's doing good and I may actually be in the running for winning something. Not that winning something is more important than the story being genuinely good.

Laurel has never revealed exactly what tests are done to determine whether a vote is fraudulent or malicious -- except to point out that people have a right to vote one for whatever reason they choose, as long as they don't do it fraudulently.

A one vote may or may not get removed and you're just as likely to lose a four or five vote as you are a one vote.

If your story is a contest entry, every vote will be checked closely. If it's just a normal posting, the votes will be tested for fraudulent and malicious votes periodically along with everyone else's stories. I don't know what kind of schedule they use for the periodic checks, but I think it's monthly -- judging by the timing of the periodic "what's going on with my votes" threads that appear every month or so.

Laurel just PMed me and said to report the story and use the "other" option. Then she said to report a suspicious vote pattern. Then the system will notify them.

Is that because the story is up or because I got the bomb?

Both ;)

The February sweeps altered "Will" more than any story I've ever had. Unless my memory is off - and it very well could be - I think it actually lost 6 votes. It was still good to me - got adjusted from a 4.79 to 4.85. I was pleased. I've sworn not to PM or otherwise directly complain about vote patterns (hit twice, both times shortly after hitting top ten or top twenty), but damnit ... it was nice to be back in the saddle. Or under it.

One thing that did disturb me was that there must have been dome higher votes that also got removed. It bothers me that people have 5-bombed it. I'm hoping it's just folks who forgot that they'd voted, or something ... it's hard to know.

Sorry it happened to you, rika. Feels like hell, doesn't it?

But I've found Laurel to be very responsive and helpful. Once when I was really upset, she even sent a consoling PM -- very nice, and the sweep was even better.

I'm not sure either what parameters the program uses when it sweeps the entire board -- has to be a program, right? A human couldn't deal with all of that language -- but it sometimes leads to weirdnesses. I mentioned recently that I had ended up with fewer votes than PCs on a poem and heard from others who had experienced it.

But don't worry about it .... once you get a hundred votes or so, let em bomb away as each has very little impact. It's when they're new, like yours, that they hold you down temporarily.

Best wishes,

As WH said, They do have a right to vote a 1.

But when the average vote is nearly 5 in nearly a dozen votes, a single 1 would most likely be a troll, or someone with tastebuds in their posterior orifice.

That actually does give me some comfort. Not that they did 1 bomb it, but they do have to right to do so. My story has a very sharp emotional edge and I know someone reading it for a quick spank would hate it. It really tears at the end emtionally and someone not prepared could get hurt more than they wanted to on this site.

My advice... get used to it. ;)

I have picked up one very persistant troll and a couple (more?) recreational ones. My stories steadilly creep down until once a month Laurel does the troll sweep and they lose 5 or 10 votes and jump back up th where they were. It's almost funny now, sad (of the trolls), but funny. :)

One-bombs are a way of life at Lit. That's especially true if you have a story on the NEW list with a high score and low vote total or you have a story listed on a contest list. If your story meets both criteria's it's almost a lead-pipe cinch you'll get a visit from some single-digit IQ troll.

My first contest entry was just trolled. The poor thing's in Humor and Satire so votes have been hard to come by. It's off the NEW list and has only had a couple in the last week, thanks to Elfin and Og (blessed be their names). Now it gets a third one and, wouldn't you know, it's a one-bomb?

So hang in there, Rik. We all share your frustration, and as Brother Graham said, now you're a true Lit writer.
