For Music lovers everywhere

Is it me or does this constitute hacking, which is against the law?
I was wondering about that, I understand the music company wanting to protect their goods, but that is a little deceptive.

I'm sure somewhere in the SLA of 'buying the cd' it says they can fuck your machine as much as they want if you choose to play the cd on a PC.

Sincerely,
ElSol

I just read the article and find it scary. I can't believe they can do this! This is nothing but hacking. And opening my hard drive to other hackers because of their paranoia should be illegal.
Sony cd's are out. I won't purchase another one no matter who the artist is. It's not worth opening my system to hackers and the prying of a corporation.

*sighs*
I have seen this software
a former.. person in my life... sent me a song that he wanted me to listen to and I had to install something to hear it.... it was telling me that in order to listen to it I had to have permission and some code... and now I know what it was....

Anyone know how to get this thing OFF my pc now?

That doesn't sound like the Sony CD thing, but like a commersial DRM file that required a certificate to run. Not that that's much better, but it's not likely to have messed up your system like the Sony CDs do.

Because of my chosen profession I may soon be in a position to be really concerned about music piracy. The trouble is, there is no solution. As long as someone CAN steal music, they WILL steal music. The only difference between now and yesterday is the level of quality that can be cheaply produced.

Sony stepped waaaaaay over the line on this one. Something needs to be figured out, but sabotaging the computers of what is probably 99% innocent music consumers seems like a criminal act to me.

That's really the problem.

People will steal it.
People will buy it.

This affects only the people who buy it...

I have to have BOUGHT the cd for this shit to be applicable; someone had their head up their ass on this one.

*sigh*

This is committee corporate think at its best.

Sincerely,
ElSol

I completely understand Sony's motivation, but they are just severely misguided. It doesn't affect people who buy it, though. It affects people who buy it and copy it. I don't copy any of my CD's, except my own work. I don't feel it is my right to copy the music of other artists, unless they give express permission. My view on this has nothing to do with the record labels, only the creators of the work.

I'm sorry, Boota, no.

Anyone who dropped one of these CDs into a PC was forced to install a special music player to hear the tunes. But with that software came another program designed to silently watch the user for illicit CD copying.

I didn't need to COPY it for the software to be installed... it was installed 'in case' I were to make illegal copies.

So actually it does affect people who buy it... because the software is installed regardless of any intention on my part to 'copy' it or any attempt to copy it.

Sincerely,
ElSol

See... on the one hand I can say alright I understand that Sony is trying to protect their artists

but Ya know what.... in a big way.... Sony is proclaiming loudly "WE ARE MONEY HUNGRY ASSES THAT WANT TO SQUEEZE MONEY OUT OF EVERYONE AND BY THE WAY WE ARE GOING TO PUT SOME PROGRAM IN YOUR COMPUTERS WHEN YOU INSERT ANY OF OUR DISCS SO THAT WE CAN WATCH WHAT YOU DOWNLOAD AND SHARE"

Personally, Sony can kiss my big ole black ass

They have NO right being in my pc.... if I think a song is amazing and I am talking to a friend and want to share the song with them over the pc because either they dont have it or I am saying to them "you just HAVE to buy this album" thats MY right to do it.

Yes... sony has just made me much more willing to buy singles from Apple than to buy albums from Sony.

I hope that model makes Sony as much money... it will certainly save me money.

For the same amount of money, I get 13 songs I know I'll like rather than 3 I like and 9 fillers.

Sincerely,
ElSol

I have an Ipod-ish type thing....
I can hook up and I buy the songs one by one to download into it.....
like you do... they can go get stuffed

I think I misunderstood the process. This software is downloaded into the computer simply by listening to it on the computer? That is even more wrong than I thought it was to start with. My only concern in the whole file-sharing argument is the creators of the work. Sony isn't trying to protect their artists, except as a byproduct of trying to protect their investment.

I just hate to see the artists getting punished because of something the record company does. No matter what you do, the record company will be fine. The huge established artists will be fine. It's the lower tier, beginning artists who get fucked in file-sharing.

Yes.

A) A piece of software is required for you to listen to the CD on the PC.
B) Along with that software, another component is installed to 'watch' for illegal copying.

Nobody was told about the other component because it hid itself... by overwriting certain files.

It was discovered by 'security agencies'.

sincerely,
ElSol

Um, just to add, in case someone didn't read the link, Sony is suspending manufacturing the anti-piracy CDs.

The point was more that they caved to pressure, I suppose.

No the point is that it doesn't matter to all of the people that have already been affected by this....

it doesn't matter to the people that unknowingly bought CDs that were put out by Sony and played them on their PCs....

the point of the whole thing is it doesn't flipping matter to all of those people that Sony has stopped doing it....

Wanna know what would have been an even better thing....
if Sony said okay yeah we did it...... we know that everyone that bought any CDs made during this time period (insert time period) and played it on their PC would be affected.... and oh by the way.... here is a fix to get the software off your pcs.... um we are sorry

Yui... wasn't a bitch slap dear.... was more of a ummm okay and what else are they gonna do type of thing... ya olde maid

Yeah, that would be nice. On the other hand, I wouldn't trust a fix that came from them. ;) They should refund the CDs though.
