Did you know that it was actually pretty easy for Houdini to escape from the safes he was locked in, because safes are designed to keep people from getting in, not out.

Often he was able to smuggle keys and tools up his arse, in his hair, and pasted to the bottom of his foot (the one place they never seemed to look). Even thin wires could be inbedded uner the skin for retrieval after the strip search.

Now, who wants to know how the Chinese Water Torture works?

I was operating the lighting board for a professional magic show once, and the headline act did that escapology thing where he is padlocked inside a big metal milk churn full of water.
I was watching him from high up in the wings, behind the curtain that rises up around the container and hides him from the audience.
I STILL COULD NOT SEE HOW HE DID IT!
He took about 25 seconds to get out, (He was just there - I don't know how) and then dried his face and hair with a towel while the audience held their breath, imagining him still in the water. He waited until it was just over a minute and the compere was pretending to panic, then they dropped the screen and I brought up the lights to wild applause.

The Chinese Water Torture was actually pretty simple...the stocks around his ankles were locked on the outside by padlocks, but the stocks themselves had a secret mechanism that would allow it to separate. The mechanism and lock were built inside the stock so you couldn't see them. To all appearances the stock appeared like two solid pieces of wood and metal. It opened with a magnetic key which Houdini had with him. The padlocks offered no problem, because they were circumvented.
