If you liked the movie, especially the D.I. that jumped all over the slackers. The actor that played the DI was an actual Marine, who was forced to retire because of combat injuries in Vietnam. He has a pretty good website up with autographed stills from the movie, including a "GI Joe" type doll of him that barks orders at you!
He reminds me so much of my DIs, I still "snap" when I hear him barking on his new TV show! Check it out...

www.rleeermey.com. :D

God, there are so many of his tirades in tha movie bouncing around in my head.

you know, they wouldn't even consider him for the part originally. He went off on one of the higher ups and the totally saw him in a different light.

I can't remember where I saw his biography but it was incredibly interesting.

That movie is such an incredible epoch.

he was the technical advisor and grabbed (literally) Stanley Kubrick and pulled him into conference, he acted out how the DI should be played. Kubrick liked it so much, they brought in a tape recorder, taped GySgt Ermey (real name), going off on Kubrick like he was a recruit. Kubrick loved it so much he cast him. When Ermey got hurt Kubrick delayed production so they actor could heal.

I love that movie. what a mind blower. It still now just thinking about it freaks me out a bit...

thank you Stick, I knew I heard that somewhere.

Lost Cause,

Thanks for the website. I remember seeing the movie right before going into to basic and [knowing he was a real marine] being thankful I was going into the army. Of course, I got to Texas and realized either way it was a bad idea:)

I doubt anyone who ever went through basic traning will forget the name of their drill instructor. I had two, and they loved playing good guy/bad guy. Sgt. Donaho and Sgt. Cruz.
