WWF changes name to World Wrestling Entertainment after court case

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) -- World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, famous for musclebound stars like The Rock and Undertaker, has met its match with nature.

The Stamford, Conn.-based company said Monday it is changing its name to World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. (WWE). The company's Web site address will now be WWE.com.

The company began considering dropping the word "Federation" from its name when the World Wildlife Fund prevailed in a recent court action in London. The court ruling prevents the World Wrestling Federation from using the logo it adopted in 1998 and the letters WWF in specified circumstances.

"Our new name puts the emphasis on the 'E' for entertainment, what our company does best," said Linda McMahon, CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment. "WWE provides us with a global identity that is distinct and unencumbered, which is critical to our U.S. and international growth plans."

London's Court of Appeal in February denied the wrestling group's challenge to an injunction, granted last year, that gives the right to the initials to the World Wildlife Fund. The injunction gives the wrestlers limited rights to use the initials in the United States.

The charity -- best known for its efforts to protect the giant panda and other endangered animal species -- had taken legal action to protect its global brand and reputation from connection with the professional wrestling group.

The wildlife charity registered the initials WWF as a trademark in 1961. It changed its name to World Wide Fund for Nature outside the United States in 1989, but uses the WWF initials and its panda logo around the world.

A new logo reflecting the name change was introduced Monday night on WWE's television show RAW on TNN.

WWE will continue to trade as WWF on the New York Stock Exchange until a suitable replacement symbol is found.

WWE announced it has changed the name of its entertainment complex in New York City's Times Square from WWF New York to The World, currently the name of its popular night club.

The company's stock closed Monday at $15.18 US, up four cents.

Speaking as a member of the World Wide Fund for Nature...... the trade name was registered in 1961, the wrestling business knew it was already there and still chose to use the same initials.

When the wrestling went global the clash was inevitable as was the result!

The old name will soon be forgotten.

Hey me too.

I joined awhile back. ;)

I just told my pal Wally Wilford Franklin that he would have to change his last name to Johnson or something. He's ok with it.

Grr i was hoping it went bankrupt or something. I guess I will have to keep wishing and praying. Now if NASCAR would just disapear too then all would be right with the world.

I had the same trouble with an old friend who was getting strange phone calls.... his name? Christian Iain Adams!

LTR - for shame on a member..... what is Kermit doing to that poor creature!:D

Just like the XFL.... *shudders*

Aww damnit I had almost forgotten about the XFL and now you had to go remind me!

To be honest, I like dthe XFL.. they just should have focused a little more on the football aspect. I still think some of the rules and innovations they came up with were awesome.

WWE ... Just doesn't sound quite right, but with all that they do now in music and TV it does fit. It's just going to take getting used to.

I'm sure in 10 years we'll wonder how we ever put up with such a stupid name that included "Federation"

thats crazy I love wwf, and it will be strange calling it wwe, i'm still calling it wwf, it's not like the wildlife fund is going to jump out my closet and sue me.

that is such a crock! WWF has had the name for years, and it never interfered with the wild life foundation, i say we all start a petition or something, WWE :(

Simple solution.

If the World Wildlife Fund changed its name in 1989, then I don't see any reason why the World Wrestling Federation couldn't use the initials in 1998. Is the WWFN trading on the market? As a not-for-profit organization, I don't think it would be. Let the WWF (or WWE) use the logo they have and the ticker symbol.
