I heard this poem, and it made me want a child to read it to...

Winken, Blinken, and Nod
By Eugene Field, 1850-1895

Winken, Blinken, and Nod one night
Sailed off in a wooden shoe --
Sailed off on a river of crystal light,
Into a sea of dew.
"Where are you going, and what do you wish?"
The old moon asked the three.
"We have come to fish for the herring fish
That live in the beautiful sea;
Nets of silver and gold have we!"
Said Winken,
Blinken,
And Nod.

The old moon laughed and sang a song,
As they rocked in the wooden shoe,
And the wind that sped them all night long
Ruffled the waves of dew.
The little stars were the herring fish
That lived in the beautiful sea --
"Now cast your nets wherever you wish --
Never afeard are we";
So cried the stars to the fisherman three: Winken,
Blinken,
And Nod.

All night long their nets they threw
To the stars in the twinkling foam --
Then down from the skies came the wooden shoe
Bringing the fisherman home;
'Twas all so pretty a sail it seemed
As if it could not be,
And some folks thought 'twas a dream they'd dreamed
Of sailing that beautiful sea --
But I shall name you the fishermen three:
Winken,
Blinken,
And Nod.

Winken and Blinken are two little eyes,
And Nod is a little head,
And the wooden shoes that sailed the skies
Is the wee one's trundle-bed.
So shut your eyes while mother sings
Of wonderful sights that be,
And you shall see the beautiful things
As you rock in the misty sea,
Where the old shoe rocked the fisherman three: Winken,
Blinken,
And Nod.

Yes LRD, isn't it wonderful. I used to read it to my daughter every night at bed time.

I used to read "I Love you Forever" to the little ones at bedtime.

Now they tell me the rhyme that is part of the story.

If you are unfamiliar with the story and are a mom or dad, take heed and have the tissues handy! It is a beautiful story about the cycle of life.

My kids tell me...
"I love you forever
I like you for always
As long as I'm living
My mommy you'll be."

*sniff* They are three and five.

I am sorry if I am getting off the topic of the thread, but the thread brought this story to mind.

As a child I loved Winken Blinken and Nod. My mother told me this in her sweetest mommy voice. It certainly wasn't the voice she used as a teen when I was chronically late for my curfew and getting into loads of trouble!

I just read "Love You Forever" my Rober Munsch to my class b/c we're doing a theme on Families- they were all enthralled by the book- I love it... :)

Mistaken,
That was my son's favorite when he was little (now 12) and we had to read that every single night before bed no matter what. I still cry at that poem it is just so wonderful and so innoncent.
