Naaaa. Kids will adapt. An 11 year old will probably learn ANYTHING faster than his parents as far as technology is concerned ;-) Don't let a gadget scare you into taking a step back.

windows 95 it has the least omount of billgates trojan viruses

Well I have both 98 and 2000 running on my puter. I like 2000 better, but maybe start him out on 98 and then go from there, just my two cents worth is all. Good Luck

For a boy of eleven years, is there really any functional difference?

I haven't seen Windows 2000, but most of the difference between 95 and 98 is in the high capacity file system and is transparent to the user. (The only obvious difference to a casual user is the long filenames in 98.)

If the computer is going to arrive with Windows 2000 installed, going backwards to Windows 98 may cause more problems than it cures.

I want an iMac so bad!!!!!!!! My fiancee got one & he loves it. He is a Mac person anyway, but I have to admit that his iMac is really easy to use. Once we get a house, I am going to commandeer the iMac for me-lol.

With out a doubt, Windows 98. Windows 2000 is much less forgiving and less game-friendly. An 11 year old (and most adults) would never need the things that are in Windows 2000 that are required for software like CAD programs and more secure office networks.

98... 2000 is based more towards networking... you might even want to give WINme a try...

For an 11 year-old

I dust off the old apple IIGS and see what damage occurs there before any money gets flushed down the crapper.

Besides, most 11 year-olds would probably post better stories that me, which I am not purporting to condone.

Now when said 11 year-old gets job and buys own computer, they can teach me whatever operating system they choose. I was raised on punch cards. Now lets get an old IBM, the Florida Punch Card Ballots, and let's find out what the real program was!

What are the specs on your computer (CPU, Memory, Hard Drive, etc...)??? That will help in deciding an appropriate opereating system...

WinMe is optimized for internet use....otherwise its a slow operating system with a few bugs to work out. Driver support is coming along slowly. Win 2000, stay away from only the fact that it's geared towards business. Windows 98SE is fairly stable lots of driver support and easier to work with.

Thanks for the feed back.!!

I would like to think all of you for your help.

For an eleven year old he is pretty sharp. my wife has him down loading muisc and burning then to CD's on ours which has windows 98 se. He also plays games and that sort of stuff.

The main reason he is getting a computer is that they live out in the sticks and he needs infromation for school work, also it is sure to help with his reading skills.

Do not worry his uncle G..... that's me; will make every effort to see that he only goes where he allowed on the net.
And i'm really good at snooping to. I might not rat him out, but i will tell his aunt Randy {Deranda}that will fix him.
