The sausage we had for breakfast this morning might have been a bit off. My BF's been throwing up with chills all morning, but I've been fine (aside from a little queasiness, maybe from listening to him.) Can one person get sick from bad-ish food while the other person doesn't?

Yeah it's possible. It depends on the level of stomach acid on one's tolerance, metabolism and just plain luck.

Yes, is the short answer. If I wasn't busy re-applying nail varnish that keeps smudging and due out the door in half an hour I'd give you the complicated answer.

Give him lots of fluids.

yep, that can happen. You might have a better immunity to salmonella than he does.

A whole buncha studies have shown that immaculately clean homes interfere with the body's ability to develop immunities.

This means that my kids will be nearly immortal!

You're in good company, Stella ;)

Yeah, it can happen. I got really ill at a camp once -like reeeealllly ill, a handful others did too -we reckon some of the eggs used for the mroning's eggy bread might have been a bit, well, bad. The vast majority of campers had no ill effects, though.

That must be what happened. My mom - slob. His mom - obsessive clean freak. I knew somewhere there must be scientific proof it's better not to waste all your time cleaning.

Tried. He yakked it right back up.

Give him lemonade- the real stuff, with real squeezed lemons. If that fails, see if he can stand to suck on a slice of lemon.

Poor guy- sounds like me yesterday. You might try Bon Ami or Immodium AD to stop the vomiting.

He's asleep now. The sausage wasn't rotten but it did taste funny. *shudders*

Ugh, getting sick at camp sounds awful.

Hmmm. I just remembered I gave the dogs one of my sausage patties and he ate both of his.

I got a tent to myself and escaped my loving yet loud tent full of young girls for a few nights....but yeah, it was awful.

How's the dog?

He needs to go at least for one full hour without throwing up before you start to reintroduce fluids. Then, go slowly. SLOWLY. Like a teaspoon at a time. Wait 10 minutes. Then another teaspoon or two. And stomach friendly things like ginger-ale (ginger helps nausea), soda pop that's just slightly flat, or the best is KoolAid. It's really as good for that as Gatorade. Clear liquids. Jello, Tea, but no coffee.

Then, to rest the gut, the BRAT diet. It's soft foods, easily digested. Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast.

After that's been tolerated for a few hours, bland foods, and easily work your way back to a regular diet.

The thing about food poisioning is that pockets of the bacteria can live hidden in your gut for days at a time, and when they break free, the nausea can return, full force.

Good luck to you. Hope he's better soon.

Thanks so much for the detailed info. I'll go make him some Kool Aid right now.

He's fine but dogs can eat damn near anything without ill effect.

Seems to happen to me on a regular basis. people around me doubling over by the porcelain throne while I, who ate the same stuff, feel nothing. Or some minor gasses, but that's about it.

Then 'woof', I guess.

Oh my yes it can happen, and believe it or not it can happen to Cats and Dogs as well.

As Vella suggested go slow with the fluids and even slower with the foods.

AS was also mentioned above the intrduction to germs at an early age is now being acknowledged as important to growing immunity. (As my mother used to say to the parents of my friends; "There is nothing wrong with good clean mud." Maybe thats why I just don't get sick.

He had one sip of water but wouldn't drink the cherry Kool Aid I brought him. He's been asleep for about 6 hours so I've just been letting him sleep, since he's not throwing up.Maybe when he wakes up, he'll feel better. Thanks guys. :)

*gags* I'm so glad I'm a vegetarian.

However he might throw it back up, keep pushing liquids. Something like Gatorade. Dehydration just makes you feel worse. If it's too severe, he may have to check into the ER for something to calm his stomach.

We don't eat much meat anyway but times like this really make me think about going vegetarian again. *bleah*

I'm afraid I have to disagree. Forcing fluids on someone who is vomiting only prolongs the illness. Dehydration, to a normally healthy, adult individual, doesn't happen as quickly as people think it does. The gut needs rest. Forcing fluids when they won't be tolerated leads to a longer bout of vomiting, which then might lead to dehydration.

Immodium won't help the vomiting. It is for controlling diarrhea. As long as there's no immediate danger, ridding the body of the pathogens is the best way to let nature run its course.

If you feel you need to, go to the ER, for IV fluids.

I think i love blt's.
i might be a bacontarion too...if there is such a thing.
Carson, you should go be a bacontarion first and then I will be one and then you can say you were the first one and I can be the second one and then we can be on oprah and talk about how many calories there is in blt's but they are the good kind of calories not like trans calories and then we can have a falling out and then go on the jerry springer show and then you can throw a chair at my head and then I will say that didn't hurt....but it really did...ow.

maybe i'll just eat tuna...do they have tunatarians?

*update*
He's been sick more than 24 hours now and I'm starting to get worried. He's kept very little fluids down. How long does it take a 275-lb man to get dangerously dehydrated?
