This is what actually goes into those gastrostomy feeding tubes...

Water, hydrolyzed corn starch, sodium and calcium caseinates, high oleic sunflower oil, partially hydrolyzed guar gum, soybean oil, soy protein isolate, Benefiber®, soy fiber, calcium phosphate tribasic, potassium citrate, artificial flavor, monoglycerides, magnesium chloride, cellulose gel, sodium ascorbate, sodium citrate, m-inositol, choline chloride, soy lecithin, potassium hydroxide, cellulose gum, alpha tocopheryl acetate, carrageenan, L-carnitine, taurine, sucralose, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, niacinamide, copper gluconate, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, beta carotene, BHA/BHT (to preserve freshness), thiamine hydrochloride, vitamin A palmitate, riboflavin, chromium acetate, folic acid, biotin, potassium iodide, sodium molybdate, sodium selenite, phytonadione (vitamin K1), cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12).

THIS IS NOT FOOD!!!

No it's not
It's all chemicals
In the old days, real food was pureed and put in the tube

No more

A cup of cornstarch is no tastier when smothered in A-1 sauce

Yeah but what is food at its base? Chemicals.

And to be honest pureed steak or ham doesn't sound like something I'd want.

Good try
It's like living purely on vitamin supplements

What they don't tell you in the commercial is that one of the major problems with these formulas is very poor absorption by the body and weight loss is a major problem, as is diarrhea, constipation, skin breakdown, muscle wasting...

It has the basic nutrition of styrofoam

Well get out the grinder then... And in many cases would those symptoms not come about anyway if no intervention was made?

Anyway I should get out of this thread because I don't know squat and ya seem ready to tee off.

it ain't bad with ketchup though...

At least ketchup is food based

A nutritional comparison of enteral feedings (including Ensure) with other fluids was done
Carnation Instant breakfast was highest in nutritional worth
Next was the infamous McDonald's milkshake
And in last place was Ensure and other enteral formulas

Ah, the beauty of marketing...

Not a matter of teeing off
My only intention is to dispel the myth that people on tube feedings are "eating"
What they are getting just isn't food
It's artificial

I guess I'd probably be surprised with how many people didn't know that already. I just think that if I know something everyone else is bound to know it already. Its all chemicals but its better than nothing and I wouldn't know the logistics of using actual pureed food in place of the banana bags of "nutrients" they now use.

In a facility, it would be impossible to orchestrate all the prep needed for pureeing real food

"Better than nothing" is a relative term

By that I mean, let the patient or designated family member decide if is better than nothing

I meant it as a relative term. As in its only better than nothing at all.

I guess I should have actually stayed on course with what I wanted to do with my life and I could have discussed this much better.

What was it you wanted to do?

First it was doctor but then I became realistic and changed to thinking of nursing (actually have a few college credits I could have used towards that from high school). But that all got tanked because of well, you know.

That and I had to rethink those 2 because my hands seem to be shaky too often. I don't think that'd go well with either profession, lol.

Pursue what you love
With either educational route, there are so many options
Shaky hands only precludes surgery
Everything else is fair game

*Shrugs* I don't have the passion I once had for it. Either is a noble profession but I don't think I could do it because I'd become too emotionally invested in it. It'd tear me up.

This is all a semantic argument. The fact is she has no conscious thought, and has no current chance of getting better. He can not respond to anything. We have to ask our selves would she want to be kept alive in this this state if she was able to make that choice for herself? It has nothing to do with food or no food. It has nothing to do with money or no money. It has nothing to do with a parents love for a child. It has nothing to do with who is right and who is wrong. It has nothing to do with church, god, government, courts, or fox news.
It is all about what she would want.

Very true

Very very true

Part of my intent was also to give people a bit more info when deciding what they will allow for themselves
So many are now drawing up their Advance Directives, it is important to understand what each choice really entails

Do Not Resuscitate does not protect from intubation, IVs, or gastrostomy tube placement

In making these important choices, one must consider the consequences of these choices
A lawyer is unable to explain the medical implications
