For realisms sake call your local airline, and ask what flights go out of Phoenix, Arizona to Los Angeles, what companies do the flying, and how long are the flight? Most airlines will be glad to help you, and they all have each other's scheduals, and even the type of aircraft that fly that route.

However if one of the characters is a licensed pilot, and is flying a certain aircraft, say a Lear Jet 45, or a Gulfstream V, then you need to know several things. The distance between the two cities in nautical miles, and the cruising speed of the aircraft that the character will be flying. Then divide the distance by the speed, and you get the time in hours, and hundreths of an hour, plus add 15 minutes for ground time. To convert the hundreths of an hour into minutes just multiply by 60. IE.: .25 x 60 = 15 minutes. So if you figure that the flight time from airfield at point A to the airport at point B equals 2hr15min. add an additional 15 minutes for ground time, and you'll have an answer of a 2hr:30min for the flight from gate to gate. NOTE*: cruising speed of most aircraft is 70% of their top speed. And if they are flying in a Cessna say, it will be bloody longer than that.

I think Mathgirl might be able to help here but she seems to be a bit busy on her school essay.

Gauche

Edited to add: Not because she's a mathematician but because she's a pilot.

Octavian,

About 1 hr 20 minutes; USAirways, America West, United, all have flights throughout the day.

If you need the time for something other than a commercial carrier, as DM mentions, let me know what type you're thinking of.

Yep, that's about right. It's an hour flight to San Diego and just a little bit longer to LAX.

Since someone else answered the commercial flight time part, I'll just do the distance part.

According to my topographicl map program, the straight line distance from city center to city center (officially the Main Post Offices) is 357.80 statute miles. (5280 ft/mile A Nautical mile is 6060 ft/mile if youneed to convert.)

The highway distance (via Interstate 10) is 375.08 statute miles.

Note, flying time into the LA area is more than a simple matter of distance. Because of the air traffic density, there are usually air traffic delays even for private planes.

Thank you

Thanks everyone for your assistance.
It is much appreciated.

Just to add a note here, in as much as most aircraft use indicated airspeed in knots you just divide 357.80 by 1.15 to get 311.13 nautical miles to work with. Now if you are going to fly that distance in say a Cessan 172, a single engine aircraft whose cruising speed is around 126 knts. Then you divide 325.16 by 126 to get a flight time from point A to point B of 2hr:34mins. After that you add 15 minutes ground time, for the best time. After that as Harold says the rest is flying in a pattern waiting your turn to land.

Now if you drove the 375.08 miles at say an average speed of 70 miles per hour, then your driving time would be 5hrs:33mins. So your best bet timewise would be to take the commercial jet as even with an hour's wait flying in pattern you get their faster.

Well, is it an African or European swallow? And, more importantly, is it laden or unladen?

The airspeed velocity of an unladen European Swallow is 10 meters per second.

Hope that helps.

Even more important -- does swallowing count for joining the mile high club?
