Last summer, (summer of 2000) i put up a flag pole.. for a mere $50.. (used chain link fencing posts and a cheap ole rope with a couple of hooks on it) a few flood lights at the bottom.. and i bought a flag at the local hardware store. It has been flying proudly in front of my house for a year now. On Monday, i noticed it was pretty shabby looking and would never make it through another Washington winter. i removed it, and retired it (i have a bunch of old glories folded neatly in a box in the hall closet). On Tuesday morning at 9 am PST, i made the hubby run to the hardware store and buy me another one, he came home and we played Taps (with a 21 gun salute) as we raised our new flag to half mast.. it's depressing to see her flying only half way up her pole.. but she's beautiful anyway.
Today, i was driving thru town. I seen everyone had their flags flying.. my face had a smile.. i was amazed at everyones flags flying. I noticed that on one house the flag was tattered and torn. I felt sorry for the older gentleman that was standing outside trying to get his lights just right on this flag so he could fly it at night. I stopped and asked him if he needed help. He said, he didn't need any. but he was hoping his son would come soon so he could get a flag before the store closed. I had heard on the news that flags were hard to come by. not wanting this old man to have to wait, i told him i'd be back in a few minutes. I ran the 2 blocks to the store, and bought the last 5 flags. Went back and helped him hang his new flag. he demanded he pay me for it, i told him, donate blood or money or time to someone who needs it. I'm a fortunate individual. I didn't lose anyone in a war, or in the tradegy of New York, Pennsylvania nor Washington. He said with a tear in his eye, he had lost his wife a year ago. and he wasn't able to do much. I hugged him and told him even a dollar would help.
I gave the other 4 flags away.. the neighbor lady had an old faded one, i don't even know if she knows that on her porch is her old flag, neatly folded in a box and on her pole is a nice new flag. I went to the fire department donated the other 3 flags they said they would be able to find someone that could use them. Even said they might send them to New York, Washington or Pennsylvania.
I feel good at what i've done.. made me smile and i hope it makes you smile also.
freakygurl32, this song has been on my mind since yesterday.
Those ragged flags are in some ways more meaningful than the brand new ones. They show patriotism that's constant and steadfast.
Ragged Old Flag
I walked through a county courthouse square,
On a park bench an old man was sitting there.
I said, "Your old courthouse is kinda rundown,"
He said, "Naw, it'll do for our little town."
I said, "Your flagpole has leaned a bit,
And that's a Ragged Old Flag you got hanging on it."
*
He said, "Have a seat", and I sat down.
"Is this the first time you've been to our little town?"
I said, "I think it is." He said, "I don't like to brag,
But we're kinda proud of that Ragged Old Flag."
*
"You see, we got a little hole in that flag there
When Washington took it across the Delaware.
And it got powder-burned the night Francis Scott Key
Sat watching it writing 'Oh Say Can You See'.
And it got a bad rip in New Orleans
With Packingham and Jackson tuggin' at its seams."
*
"And it almost fell at the Alamo
Beside the Texas flag, but she waved on through.
She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville
And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill.
There was Robert E. Lee, Beauregard, and Bragg,
And the south wind blew hard on that Ragged Old Flag."
*
"On Flanders Field in World War I
She got a big hole from a Bertha Gun.
She turned blood red in World War II
She hung limp and low by the time it was through.
She was in Korea and Vietnam.
She went where she was sent by her Uncle Sam."
*
"She waved from our ships upon the briny foam,
And now they've about quit waving her here back home.
In her own good land she's been abused...
She's been burned, dishonored, denied and refused."
*
"And the government for which she stands
is scandalized throughout the land.
And she's getting threadbare and wearing thin,
But she's in good shape for the shape she's in.
'Cause she's been through the fire before
and I believe she can take a whole lot more."
*
"So we raise her up every morning,
Take her down every night.
We don't let her touch the ground
And we fold her up right.
On second thought I DO like to brag,
Cause I'm mighty proud of that Ragged Old Flag."
oh, i know an old ragged flag is the same.. but you should see these flags.. so old.. torn where they hang on the ropes and so faded you couldn't see the stars.. i keep all of my flags.. i know i'll have one for a back up just incase..
All American Legion Posts have flag ceremonies...the only proper way to dispose of used and tattered U.S. Flags. Never burn one in your trash of throw it in the garbage. Take it to your nearest A.L. and they will dispoe of it properly.
get rid of my flags?? omg.. no way, they are neatly folded.. wrapped in plastic and put in a box.. each one has a memory.. some of them flew during the Gulf War.. one was my fathers from when he was in the navy.. one was from his funeral.. i have like 10 of them..
but thanks for the information.. maybe someday if i need to clean out that closet.. i'll take them down there.. to the AL
Going home last night, I just turned on to the Freeway, on top of the overpass were two women with kids, waving a big American flag! I blew my horn, they waved....it brought tears to my eyes.
I was just sent this and thought it was an EXCELLENT IDEA! Let's all participate and pass it on!
To show those terrorists that we Americans stick together, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14 is "Flags Across America." All Americans are asked to display the American flag either in their homes or cars. Let's keep the meaning of UNITED in "United States".
