Fly fishing rod as weapon

Don't remember genre (romance perhaps). A man helps/rescues/shelters an abused woman. Her abuser finds where she is and attempts to enter mans house. The quickest weapon at their disposal are flexable fishing poles. They keep hitting intruder (leaving welts on his back) until the police show up. Any help appreciated.
