A tribute to a friend that never posted here.
Floyd was a with drawn child, sang in the choir of his parents Baptist church. Floyd was 13 when I first met him. Onh his 16th birthday a friend and I conspired to get Floyd laid. Wasn't quite expecting that 'coming out' would be in the back of the family station wagon. But the goal was to get Floyd laid.
Time passed and we knew not the demon we had unleashed. Floyd started doing disco. Easy money, easy women, free cocaine. Everyone wanted to be Floyd's friend.
Hemlock
His contemporary was K C (and the sunshine band). they went to school together and were competitors on the Miami scene at the time. K C went to London and the rest is history as far as he's concerned.
Floyd milked the Miami market until disco passed him by. But he still had that voice.
Floyd finally figured it out and went to London too. Ended up being auditioned to do an album with Mama Cass. He beat out Dave Mason for the spot. Before they ever went into the studio, Cass died and Floyd really never got passed that.
In '77 I moved to New Mexico for the second time - the still music still sucked. So just get what you want. I ended up importing a Miami band and molding into a New Mexico format. It re-energized Floyd.
Floyd's little brother Dave (Evans) played lead (Look him up on Utub). A guy by the name of Oscar Dorta, who came to us by way from Columbia, was the drummer.
Oscar on HBLA VD. with Skin Trade.
Tom "Hollow Leg" McGill was the rhythm guitar player. He went on to play in the house band for a major name in Las Vegas. He's still around.
McGill
Went through two bass players. Both great. One was an asshole, the other had real life conflicts.
This past Aug. I was sitting in a little meet and greet in Jemez Sping's NM, crowed share a table time. The conversation got around to local bands. These were young folk, and they still remember the band.
Hmmmmmmm, I thought. So I started to ask around. In some parts of the state they're legendary, in other parts............who.?
But to have a 'name' after 40 years IS something!
Anyway, I'm going to put the band back together.
Back to the point, Floyd died a few years ago. He can't be replaced, and I don't want to replace him. But I do want to introduce a new generation to his talent and music.
Floyd's favorite song.
