Being fairly new at this and very interested in floggers and flogging, I was wondering if we might start a thread on different types of floggers that people like, their pros and cons and any techniques that they found to be particularly effective. Thanks for any info. :)

Great thread, since this is one of my FAVE things. :D

My preferred floggers vary with my mood, like everything, and with what my Dom prefers at the moment. My ultra faves are a nice soft suede with the falls about 1/4" wide and a deer skin flogger about the same size. I do prefer them to be really full - 50+ falls rather than the smaller 20 falls - although the smaller ones certainly have their place. While they may seem to be soft and tame, used properly, they can sting just right. Rubber floggers can really bite, and if I'm being flogged after playing with wax on my back, I prefer the suede over the rubber. We haven't really used too much else because these are the ones that we both prefer so far.

I experienced three very interesting homemade floggers last night at a dungeon party and I think we may recreate them ourselves.

The first was made out of tube socks. No lie. It had about 8-10 tube socks that each had a few balled up tube socks stuffed inside them, then they were duct taped together for a handle. It was very thuddy and had to be swung pretty hard. But the impact after awhile was very interesting.

A different Dom had 2 string floggers that were also homemade. Both were made out of a thin nylon string that had been frayed all the way up. They were virtually the same except for the length of the falls. They were very soft, didn't really bite at all, and were too soft to be thuddy. But they were quite nice for that little in between time when you're going to switch from one type to another. A nice break between sessions, if you will.

The same Dom had another string flogger that he had made. It was quite long, but he had looped the strings at the end so that they wouldn't fray. That one wasn't as full as the other two, and it had quite a bite to it.

I'm interested to hear from more experienced users, too. Who's next?

Thanks for the info. I have three which I have tried with my wife. One with looped nylon, which she likes, esp. on her pussy (has cum just about everytime I do that), suede- which she prefers on her ass, and a small one with bull hide, which is not hewr favorite. Have a new one coming in elkhide withabout 50 falls and think it might be very good for her.

Floggers are nice....I make and sometimes sell a few different non-leather kinds. They have more sensation than you would think. One kind is made of satin ribbon with the ends burn-sealed to prevent fraying. It actually has quite a bit of sting to it, and is very nice sensation for dragging the silky falls over bare skin. I do another version of that with rattail (think: rolled) satin falls that is heavier and a bit stingier than the first. I usually dip the ends of that one in latex for added sting factor.

I also make a kind with 'rubber' lacing that stings like a bitch. There are a lot of rubber/latex floggers out there for purchase that have very thin strands, and I just don't find they have much sensation. I wanted something that stung more, so i found this stuff and it makes a fantastic flogger. I also make one with plastic craft string that REALLY stings.

I don't have pics of the rubber or plastic lace ones yet.

I make them in half sizes too which are awesome for genital flogging.

Other floggers I love......Im not a fan of heavy hide floggers. They knock the breath out of me and I just don't enjoy that heavy THUD. It doesn't hurt, so those no pain to enjoy, it just feels like someone is pounding you on the back and it's really quite boring. I prefer sting or really soft sensual leathers. I've felt the frayed rope floggers, but they tickle too much so not really a fan of them.

Floggers...oh I like them all.

I'll take 2 of each please.

One for each hand, no doubt. :D

Yeah, I just got a call that my new flogger is being shipped tomorrow.

Now who wants the first taste?

Good idea for a thread, Rav. Floggers are my favourite bondage tools, actually. And my most widely used item happens to be a black leather Cat-'O-Nine Tails.

I think I prefer using it over anything else for the level of control you can get with it. It's easy to go between hard and soft lashes with and I find just dragging it across the back, nipples, or crotch can still create a good reaction. Right now the leather works fine, but I am intrigued by the rubber and polymer types out there as well.

Thanks for the info and opinions.

Yay! Just got my brand new elkhide. 50 falls. 24 inches long. Can't wait to have some fun with it. :nana: :nana: :nana:

Floggers are easy to make

Making a flogger is not difficult.
I use 1/8" braided parachute cord (Get it at the surplus store in generous hanks )Decide how many falls you want, cut them twice as long as you desire and half as many, then fold them double.
Now tie them with the bosu'n's sinnet to make a grip(you can twist it to make a very nice spiral), knot and heat seal the very ends.
I've never had this type break the skin or leave a real welt, but it can hurt like bejabbers with a hard swing.
For the price of one commercial whip, you can make an entire battery of scourges, teasers, punishers, special ones for breasts and genitals, and a real Hell-bringer for when that bitch has really screwed up.
Mine has twenty strands, three blood knots on each fall, and is a yard long.
It is never forgotten.
A good knot book is essential for this sort of thing-the handcuff knot alone will save you a bundle, while a simple length of rope in your pocket is not as embarrassing as a pair of handcuffs or straps.
Not to mention the possibility of restraint failure...............
'

Flogger fabrication

Suits me.
I pride myself on being adept at making serviceable equipment.
A word to the wise, do not play with standard police handcuffs-use the three link, soft steel cheapies.
I spent many years in Law enforcement, and used handcuffs almost daily, and they will quit on you.
If they do, you'll need the fire department to get them off, they're made of very hard steel indeed.
The cheaper ones can be cut with regular bolt cutters.
You can divide a pair to attach them to a post or door frame, which at three bucks a set, isn't hard to take.
Lost keys are another major bummer.
Use the double lock.
Nylon straps, with Fastex buckles make a very serviceable restraint, easy to make and modify-they also are much more comfortable for your partner to lie on.
After all, your partner doesn't really want to escape.
If you have leather questions, I'll be glad to help, I was once a semi pro at this sort of thing, and I've made many a toy to order.
Most of my floggers are too big to use two at a time, they look a lot more fearsome than they are.
Remember to "comb the cat", run your fingers through the lashes to keep them from tangling.
Naval cats were made of rope, not leather, as a rule.
Leather will cut, if you are not very careful.
Tell me where to put it, and I'll write you chapter and verse on chains, how to fasten them and how to make them serve your purposes.
I'm here if you need me.

I'm not saying I'm anything like a real expert on floggers, but I will say that I'm a pretty talented amateur... *grin* After all, I just did a 2 hour, hands on presentation, on floggers and flogging a couple of weeks ago. Shoulda been there! I'm not going to repeat the whole thing, but here are some high points.

As general rules for flogging:

1) More falls = more "thud", fewer falls = more "sting"
2) Wider falls = more "thud", narrower falls = more "sting"

3) From least intense to most intense materials:
3a) Fur
3b) Nylon Rope (unbraided)
3c) Hair (horsehair is most common. Human hair less common. You can approximate that sensation with very low test strength monofilament fishing lines)
3d) Other Cloth Falls
3e) Deerskin
3f) Nylon Rope (braided)
3g) Suede
3h) Leather (cow and other hides)
3i) Latex/Neoprene/Other Plastics (BE CAREFUL WITH LATEX! Many people have an allergy to latex. My girl janey is deathly allergic to the stuff. For example, latex dust in the air from rubber gloves can mean a trip to the hospital for us. If I were to hit her with a latex flogger I would have her skin burning with hives in minutes...)
3j) Rope (hemp, sisal, jute [in other words, the classic material for a real "cat-o'-nine tails"])
3k) Chain

4) Flat falls = thuddy, rounded falls = sting-y, braided falls = even more sting
5) Longer falls = less control, shorter falls = more control

6) practice, Practice, PRACTICE
6a) Practice on fuzzy pillows and/or stuffed animals. The nap of the fur allows you to see where your falls are actually hitting and how they are moving across the surface of your target.

7) Knots at the ends of your falls can really bite!

My collection includes 3 matched pairs (ultra-suede cloth, suede, leather), and 16 other individual floggers in various lengths & materials to produce a wide variety of sensations from mild to wild! With a grand total of 22 floggers in the toy bag, they are the most numerous of my many toys. Canes are next with 17 (currently) in various materials and widths and lengths.

Some of my floggers (I've added to the collection since these photos were taken...):

And yes, I know there are a couple of quirts and a dragon's tail in this one, and no, I do NOT count them in my flogger count.

Enjoy!

okay this one has my total fascination. Geoff Sir details if you don't mind please.........

Details, eh?

Total length: 27"
Length of falls: 16"
width of falls: apprx 2-1/4"
# of falls: 6
Construction: Each fall is made of 10 red suede hearts, and 1 black one. The tip of the first red heart of each tail is attached to the handle with an upholstery tack. Each subsequent red heart has a slit cut in the middle of it where the tip of the next heart is slipped through, then rivetted to the center of the heart. The last, black, heart piece is riveted to the last red heart and has no slit. Very thuddy, with the rivets providing just a hint of sting.

I purchased it from a vendor at an event in North Carolina a few years ago, and I call it "Share the Love" *lol* And before you ask, I believe that vendor is no longer in business.

Hope that helped!

I have two. If you have two and hold both in one hand, you create a new flogger. The nuclear option.

They're people who do can simultaneous figure 8s with floggers in both hands. Florentine flogging they call it. I had about as much success with it that I had ice skating. Which isn't much.

I'd like one with a little more bite. One day.

Tubular

Take a rubber tube, pick your size and length, slit the end to make as many falls as desired.
Ye-ouch!
Yellow surgical rubber is a very challenging material for the sub's skin.
I like a flexible grip, say half the length of the whole whip, to give it more oomph.
I want to make one out of flat tapes or ribbons, but I can't quite figure out how to fabricate a grip to please me.
Any ideas?

Serijules makes ones out of ribbons. You might try asking her.

sincerely thank you Geoff Sir more than I needed ..........initially....

What you make your flogger out of
the number of (not sure of right name) "ribbons"
width of ribbons?
material of ribbons

all depend on what type of effect you want the flogging to have

Whippin' up some heat.

Sometimes they are called falls or lashes, even strands.
There are all sorts of materials-leather, nylon straps or cords, rubber, plastic, braided cotton even hair.
Some sting, some just make noise, and some will do real damage if you don't watch it.
Hint: Hold your off hand or a book in your armpit to moderate the force of the blows-a technique used by professionals.

I do love floggers!! We have four that my Dom made. One out of rabbit that is nice and soft. One from suede and dear hide that can be very intense and then there is the cat-o-nine which I love/hate. I do know that I WANT more.

I LOVE that Share the  one!!

Yeah,

Both serijules and Geoff's look great. Thank you both for sharing them. Its helping me in my thoughts about making one.

Geoff's post listing them in order of intensity and explaining the falls helps alot in understanding as well.
